Neste estudo, explorou-se a relação entre a prevalência de SME e os fatores de risco presentes na atividade da costura da indústria do calçado, com especial relevância para os fatores psicossociais do trabalho. Tendo em conta que os fatores de risco físico também foram recolhidos pela investigadora, e não foram utilizados neste contexto de trabalho, seria pertinente a continuação deste estudo nessa linha de investigação mais abrangente.

É muito difícil determinar qual é o impacto relativo que cada um dos fatores teve sobre os resultados observados, ou seja, muitos desses fatores são influenciados por outros em maior ou menor proporção, e podem não ser esses, as verdadeiras causas dos sintomas. Torna-se assim interessante investigar a influência de cada fator sobre a prevalência de SME isoladamente, tendo em conta posteriormente os fatores físicos do trabalho. Deste modo, sugere-se a realização de estudos que permitam continuar esta linha de investigação, nomeadamente no que diz respeito: (1) à comparação da prevalência dos sintomas em um maior número de empresas, trabalhadores e restantes setores que não foram estudados; (2) à avaliação da eficácia da formação, incidente nos fatores de risco identificados, na redução da prevalência reportada pelas trabalhadoras; (3) à utilização de outros métodos, em conjunto com o questionário, para confirmação do diagnóstico da doença músculo-esquelética, nomeadamente através de métodos observacionais, de instrumentação e/ou de avaliação médica; (4) à realização de estudos longitudinais, de forma a fortalecer o valor preditivo do estudo.

Em suma, é necessária mais investigação centrada nas condições específicas das indústrias do calçado e nas condições de trabalho a que estão sujeitos os seus trabalhadores, de forma a enriquecer esta temática a nível nacional e internacional.
