Paulinia cupana (guarana) is a Brazilian plant given great prestige in popular medicine, for example as being a potent stimulator of
brain functions. The authors assessed the effects of the long-term administration of guarana on the cognition of normal, elderly volunteers. Forty-five volunteers were studied, with a random distribution in three experimental groups: placebo (n=15), caffeine (n=15), and guarana (n=15), in a double-blind study. There were no significant cognitive alterations in these volunteers.

um a planta da flora brasileira que goza de grande prestigio na m edicina popular, entre eles de ser potente estim ulante das funyoes cerebrais. O s autores avaliaram os efeitos da adm inistrayao cronica da guarana sobrea cogniyao de voluntarios idosos norm ais. Foram estudados 45 voluntarios, sendo distribufdos aleatoriam ente para um dos
tres grupos experim entais: Placebo (n=15), C afefna (n=15) e G uarana (n=15), em estado duplo-cego. N ao obteve-se nenhum a
m udanya significativa na cogniyao desses voluntarios. I
