Tecnologia cultural.
O damasqueiro: Produção, comércio e consumo. Características da espécie. Tecnologia cultural. Pós-colheita.
Variedades. Tecnologia cultural. Pós-colheita.

Prior knowledge and skills
Knowledge on general fruit crops science is required.
The students intended learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and competences)
To provide basic information about the Mediterranean fruit species and its cultivation. To enable students to develop analysis on the potential of the Mediterranean fruit production in the country, taking into account market conditions, technical aspects, and the existence of
infrastructures and others external constraints to production.
Syllabus
Almond ? Almond industry. Interest of the crop in the Algarve region. Climatic, geographic and soil and water requirements. Cultural aspects. Postharvest. Strengths and weaknesses of the culture in Portugal and in the region of Algarve.
Fig tree - Fresh fruit and dried fig cultivars. Cultural aspects. Postharvest.
Carob - Industrial use, world trade, and importance in the region. Densities and cultivars in Portugal and other countries. Irrigation and fertilization. Diseases and pests. Teaching methodologies (including evaluation)
Crops technical aspects will be explained using multimedia resources. Visits to fruit farms will be done to familiarize students with the crops on a farm context. Students will participate in seminars given by experts and researchers carry out an Individual project on a species production in given geographical, economic and social site, with technical and economic analysis. The assessment is done through one written test or final exam on the subjects taught in theoretical and practical classes, weighting 70 % of the final grade. The individual job (visit?s reports) has a weighting 30%. The minimum grade of each assessment is equal to 10.
