Domain of specialization

Research involving geochemical studies of volcanic rocks from Mid-Ocean ridges and Ocean Islands using major-, trace element, volatiles and isotopic studies as a means to explore sub-oceanic mantle melting processes, source evolution and magma differentiation along the upper mantle and Earth’s crust. Geologic mapping at various scales: 1/10 000; 1/25 000; 1/ 50 000; 1/200 000.

Present research interests

Geochemical and petrological studies based on Mid-Ocean Ridge Basalts samples collected in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) in the Azores region (hotspot-ridge interaction). Research on the role of volatiles on mantle melting and magma delivery along the MAR segments and Ocean islands. Relationships between magmatic evolution and tectonic activity with the generation of submarine hydrothermal vents in the MAR. Magmatism associated to seamounts in the Madeira province. Hydrothermal rocks and alteration associated to submarine hydrothermal vent fields. Volcanism, magma evolution and mantle source characterization associated to Ocean Islands – Azores and South Shetland Islands. Studies in the complex SW border of the

Ossa-Morena-Zone (Portugal) where back-arc and subduction settings seem to have played a major role on the geological evolution. Geological mapping in the Ossa Morena zone. Geochemistry and petrology in magmatic rocks of South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. Geological and lithological mapping in King George Island. Research in the relationship between lithological characteristics and the generation of permafrost in the South Shetland Islands.

Previous and current scientific and/or professional activities

My professional activity in earth sciences started by obtaining a graduation degree in Geology in Lisbon University (Portugal) in 1991. Immediately after I entered in the Portuguese Geological Survey (PGS) where I start doing systematic mapping in the South of Portugal, with particularly interest in developing geochemical and petrological studies in intrusive rocks to better understand the magma generation mechanisms existing in the deep continental crust and to established relationships with their tectonic placement.

I have developed the Geochemistry Laboratory in Lisbon (based on the AAS and ICP-AES instrumental analytical techniques) for major and trace element characterization of silicate rocks. Between 1993 and 2003 I became responsible and have coordinated the analytical work developed in the Laboratory. During that time I studied, implemented and developed the applicability of distinct solubilization techniques for various types of silicate rocks, having distinct mineralogical compositions, for multi-elemental analyses by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and ICP-AES. The analytical work supported various national and international scientific projects, but also gave closely support to the mapping of distinct litological units existing in the Portuguese territory. During the time I was the coordinator of the Laboratory, I have participated in a significant number of international cooperative tests for chemical characterization of standard reference materials (United States Geological Survey, Geological Survey of Japan, International Working Group).

In 2000, I started doing research (geochemistry and petrology) on the volcanic rocks from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) in the Azores region. Additionally, these studies on the MAR were extended to the hydrothermal rocks (including massive sulfides) associated with the hydrothermal vent fields located in the Azores region (Menez Gwen, Lucky Strike, Saldanha and Rainbow). Since that time I have participated in some oceanographic expeditions, that I list below:

Based on the sampling performed I have focused my studies on the geochemistry and petrology of the basalts collected in various segments along the MAR (from 33ºN to 45ºN). This contributed to better characterize the chemical characteristics of mantle in the Azores region and to allow insights into the origin and evolution of the mantle components that control the Azores hotspot magmatism.

In 2002 I obtained a scholarship from the Portuguese Science Foundation that allowed me to develop my PhD work in England (National Oceanographic Centre, Southampton), under the supervision of Dr. Bramley Murton. During that period I made research on the sub-oceanic mantle processes, magmatic evolution and their relationship with tectonic activity and generation of hydrothermal vent fields associated to the MAR. This research was made through the interpretation and modeling of major and trace elements geochemistry, Sr-Nd-Pb radiogenic isotopes, volatile components (H2O and CO2) and mineral chemistry obtained by microprobe. In 2007 I finished my

PhD (Melt supply and magmatic evolution at a large central MOR volcano located in the Lucky Strike segment, 37ºN on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Azores region) and immediately after I was granted a scientific project from the Portuguese Science Foundation, having

a total found of ~200 000 Euros (Mantle melting and crust production in the MAR under the influence of the Azores hotspot: a case of study at KP-5 segment (37.5ºN).

In collaboration with Dr. Jacqueline Dixon (RSMAS, Miami University, USA) I have developed the study of the volatiles (analyses, modeling, interpretation) in the MAR basalts to better characterize the chemical characteristics of mantle in the Azores region and to allow insights into the origin and evolution of the mantle components that control the Azores hotspot magmatism.

My professional background in analytical geochemistry was significantly enlarged by the instrumental techniques used in Southampton and Miami, which include ICP-MS, TIMS and FTIR, and these analytical tools constitute the fundamental basis to study the petrology of oceanic volcanic rocks, which can be considered my main area of expertise at the present.

Presently, I am also involved in studying the magmatism in other segments along the MAR in the Azores region (segment KP-5, Hayes Fracture Zone and 45ºN on the MAR), as well as studying the geochemical variability on the basalts from the Madeira-Tore Rise and its relationship with the Madeira and Canarias hotspots. I am still actively involved in the research carried out in the Mid-Ocean Ridges, representing Portugal in the InterRidge Steering Committee since 2009.

Since 2012 I started to do research in the volcanic rocks from Deception Island, Antarctica. In 2014 and 2015 I was awarded two scientific projects, inside the Portuguese Polar Program – GEOPERM I and II (Integrated geological, geochemical and permafrost studies in Fildes and Barton Peninsulas, King George Island, Antarctica). The two field campaigns resulted in the geological and lithological mapp of the Meseta Norte, and its surroundings (in Fildes Peninsula) and the West half area of Barton Peninsula. About 150 igneous rock samples were collected and are presently under study. This important Polar research activity has been recognized by the invitation to be part of the scientific commission of the 7th Portuguese Polar Science Conference and by the invitation to present, during 2015, three plenary conferences in Portugal:

Two papers and six conferences abstracts have been produced concerning the Polar research developed in the South Shetland islands.

During 2015, I was part of the executive, organization and scientific teams of the X Iberian Congress of Geochemistry that was held in Lisbon.

Presently, the main scientific activity is included in the Project “ Geological Infrastructure investigation and mineral resources – Portuguese Geological Maps”, funded by the Portuguese Government, with the realization of systematic geological mapping in the South of Portugal (Sheet 43-A, Cuba, 1/ 50 000 and Sheet 6, 1/200 000).
