PAN AMERICAN HEALTH ORGANIZATION FLAG

On a number of occasions the Secretariat has received requests from Governments and institutions to display a flag of the Pan American Health Organization to demonstrate support for the principles and purposes of the Organization.

In Resolution CD3.R14, the third meeting of the Directing Council in 1949 adopted the official seal of the Organization. This seal is now used on all official documents and on the stationery of the Organization. A flag, however, would be a visible symbol of the Pan American Health Organization.

The proposed Pan American Health Organization flag would feature a variation of the official seal of PAHO showing a map of the Americas on a light blue background, similar to the United Nations color, centered on a deep blue field, similar to that of the flag of the Organization of American States. The emblem would bear the Latin words "Pro Salute Novi Mundi" along with the acronyms OPS and PAHO. In this manner, mindful of the larger community of nations and the universality of the right to health, the commmitment of the Pan American Health Organization to the peoples of the Americas would be reaffirmed. A flag code and regulations concerning the use of the flag would be prepared based on the flag code and regulations of the United Nations and the World Health Organization. A facsimile of the proposed flag is attached.

The Secretariat proposes to the Executive Committee the following resolution:
