Since 2013 - The Gate of the Priests (Bab el-Gasus Project): Director of the Project aiming at the reconstruction of the documental corpus originally found in Bab el-Gasus (Egypt, Third Intermediate Period). Sousa coordinates the activities of the team composed of scholars, PhD students and curators from different museums and Universities, such as: Louvre Museum, Vatican Museums, Antiquities Museum of Leiden, Royal Museums of Art and History of Brussels, Turin Egyptian Museum, Leiden University and University of California- Los Angeles, among others. The Project is based in the University of Coimbra.

In 2013 and 2014, the Project organized an exhibition of the epigraphic and artistic work of Susan Osgood, Senior Artist in the Epigraphic Mission of the University of Chicago at Luxor. The exhibition showcased the major areas of her archaeological work in the documentation and record of Theban monuments. Her work was presented in the galleries of the University of Porto (2013) and in the Museum of Science of the University of Coimbra (2014).

The Project launched an international conference – Bab el-Gasus in Context – which will be held in Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in 19-20 of September (2016).

In 2016, the Project organized the Bab el-Gasus: The 125th Anniversary Programme of Conferences inviting museums holding collections from Bab el-Gasus to host public talks on the subject. Conferences have been scheduled in Cairo, Lisbon, Leiden, Kiev and Moscow and more are being planned.

In cooperation with Brill Publishers, a sub-series dedicated on Bab el-Gasus has been created within the Culture and History of the Ancient Near East Series. This sub-series is coordinated by Sousa and Dr. Alessia Amenta (Vatican Museums).

2009 - 2013 - The Eighth Lot of Bab el-Gasus: Post-doctoral Research Project financed by the Portuguese Foundation of Science with cooperation with the University of Leiden, aiming at the description and publication of the coffins of Geographical Society of Lisbon. The catalogue of this collection is going to be published by Brepols (in press).

2011 – 2013 - The Roman Serapeum of Panoias. Interdisciplinary research project aiming to study the archaeological site of Panoias (Portugal). It involved the cooperation between the University of Porto, the University of Lisbon, the University of Evora, the National Archaeological Museum and the Museum of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The output of this project was the temporary exhibition in the Archaeological Museum of Vila Real (November 2011-March 2012) showcasing the reconstruction and interpretation of the archaeological structures of the site. A catalogue was published with the studies provided by the team.

2010 – 2013 - Multiculturalism in Ancient Alexandria. Interdisciplinary project resulting from the cooperation with the University of Porto, the University of Lisbon, the University of Coimbra and the University of Alexandria. The output of this project was the International Colloquium and the book gathering the studies of the team.
