Almir Joaquim Pereira

The Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SBOT) and, especially, the friends of Almir Joaquim Pereira, suffered a great loss when he passed away.

He was a former president of the Rio de Janeiro Regional Branch of the SBOT and was an active professional in several orthopedics services. He was always a competent physician and a person who was devoted to the causes of Brazilian Orthopedics.

We shared the experience of working at the hospital “Casa de Saúde Santa Luzia”, in the clinic run by the late Dr. Arnaldo Bomim, at the beginning of the 1960s.

Over the course of his professional career, he worked not only at Santa Luzia, but also at Hospi-tal Souza Aguiar and at HospiHospi-tal Barata Ribeiro, where he was head of the orthopedics service. Recently, he was working at the hospital “Casa de Saúde Santa Maria”, in Laranjeiras, guiding younger colleagues.

Almir was a dynamic person with great enthusiasm for the SBOT. Not long ago, through the Society, he published a book on the history of orthopedics in Rio de Janeiro, which he knew like few others did. He also authored another correlated work, dedicated to the Brazilian Society of Hand Surgery.

Correct in his actions, uncompromising in his defense of medical causes and affable in his per-sonality: this was Almir. His dynamism and ease of communication made him a igure who moved easily among all the groups within orthopedics in Rio de Janeiro, where he was always welcomed with recognition of his merits.

We register our respect for our colleague who has passed away and we express our sorrow for the loss of the friend who has left us.
