Thebeginningsoforthopedicsasanacademicinstitutionand specificprofessionalactivityinBrazildatesbackto approxi-mately60yearsago.
Beforethen,patientswithclinicalproblemsofthe loco-motorapparatuswere treatedbysurgeonsorpediatricians, andthosewithproblemsresultingfromtraumabysurgeons orcuriousindividualswhohadtheskillofputtingbonesand joints“backintoplace”.
Orthopedicsbeganthroughtheactionsofsomeself-taught physiciansandotherswhohadthepossibilityofundergoing trainingabroadandbroughtknowledgeacquiredatclinicsin othercountries.
Thedisseminationofthisknowledgewasveryslow.Itwas donethroughbooksandaverysmallnumberofjournalsin for-eignlanguagesthatweresenttoBrazil.Inthismanner,these gentlemenhadgreatpower:thepowerofknowledge.Jealous of this power, some of these pioneers shared this knowl-edgeveryparsimoniouslyandonlyallowedcloseassistants toacquirepartofthisknowledge,whichhad beenbrought backwith“suchdifficulty”.
Thepowerofsomeofthesefirstprofessorsresembledthat ofa“king”,sincetheydeterminedapproachesandtreatments inawaythatdidnotallowquestioningandtheyactedon theirassistants’livesinanauthoritarianmanner.Theyeven decidedwheretheirassistantsshouldwork.
Therelationshipinmostclinicswasoneofunquestioning obedienceordismissal,andtherelationshipbetweenclinics wassimilartowhatexistedinEuropeatthetimeofthesmall fiefdoms:respectformypowerorwar.
Orthopedicslostoutgreatlyduringthoseyears,sinceany formofdevelopmentwasregardedasathreat.Someofthese augustprofessorsdidnotacceptbeingquestionedand, with-outthestimulusofquestioning,becamemediocre.Itwasrare forthemtoreturntothemajorcentersofEuropeortheUnited Statesforupdates.Exchange ofinformationwas seenas a threat.

There were disputes between clinics in the same city, betweenclinicsinneighboringcitiesand,evenworse,between clinicsindifferentstates.
There were several exceptions among the pioneers of orthopedics.Evensomeoftheold“kings”renewedthemselves overthecourseoftheirprofessionallivesandcreatedclinics thattodayaresomeofthefoundationsofBrazilian orthope-dics.
There was one pioneering professor who lived through thosetimeswithahistoryverysimilartothatoftheothers, butwhowasamanaheadofhistime.Hetookpartinthisera oforthopedicswithouteverbecomingcontaminatedwiththe “powerofknowledge”andalwaysbelievedintheevolutionof Brazilianorthopedicsthroughcontinuingmedicaleducation. AttheBrazilianSocietyofOrthopedicsandTraumatology (SBOT),andinotherbodiesthatusedhiscontactswithforeign clinicspositively,healwaysdefendedmedicalresidencyasa formoftraining.
HefoundedtheBrazilianJournalofOrthopedics(Revista BrasileiradeOrtopedia,RBO)andleditfor28yearswiththe aimofhavingameansofdisseminationoforthopedic knowl-edgeinPortugueseforBrazilians.Heaimedtoformastrong andrepresentativeBrazilianorthopedicscommunity.
ThiswasProfessorDonatoD’Angelo,whosuffereda dev-astatingstrokein2006andpassedawaythisyear.However, themarksthatheleftwillbewithusforever.

TodayinBrazil,wehaveanactiveorthopedicscommunity, whichhas alreadyhosted severalinternational congresses. Ithas also been represented atmany societies within our specialtyaroundtheworld,byverywellselectedyoung pro-fessionals.Wehavecentersofexcellencethatprovidetraining andwecanbeproudofbeingBrazilianorthopedists,asDonato D’Angelodesired.
