Jornal Vascular Brasileiro – ten years

Marcio Meirelles*

In the middle of the road there was a stone, there was a stone in the middle of the road.

Carlos Drummond de Andrade

As we learned soon enough, there were many stones in the middle of our road, of diferent sizes and shapes. Ones were diicult to overcome; others were more “delicate”. here were political, economic and scientiic stones; at last, stones for anyone´s liking (and some disliking).

his is how the Jornal Vascular Brasileiro started. But fortunately, some stones were in our favor. he “inventor”, creator and irst editor of our journal, for instance, was a “stone” – hard, but precious: Prof. Telmo Pedro Bonamigo. herefore, humbly following the footsteps of a 2,000-year old story of success, the journal of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV) was also to be built on... a stone.

It was not an easy decision to found a journal that would depend completely on our Society. People would say it would be unproitable, there would be no sponsors, no regularity etc.

Two decisions were promptly made. he journal could not rely on advertisement; SBACV would be in charge of inancing the journal, ensuring its periodicity, with the cer-tainty that it would take of due to its quality and that spon-soring companies would be willing to cooperate. he other

decision was that its title and presentation would make it very clear: it was a Brazilian journal; nevertheless, it would be destined to overcome boundaries “from Brazil to the World”, as we pretentiously liked to say. JVB was not created to only be “another journal”, small and limited. It was part of the project to ight for its full indexation.

Other stones appeared in our way. One was the federal Agency for Scientiic Research decision detrimental to aca-demic publication in national journals; another was the im-possibility of the irst Editor to continue his brilliant work, due to professional obligations.

In both situations, the vigor and versatility of our Society membership prevailed. Professor Winston Bonetti Yoshida took over the position of Editor-in-Chief, and, with persistence, skills and unwavering dedication,, moved on without discontinuing the project.

he Journal is about to complete ten years of existence. Indexation in Medline and in the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) – the next goals – depend on a moderate in-crease in the production of original articles. We are close to this goal, and we are sure that we can reach it with extra efort.

herefore, we do have one more stone in the road. And this one we shall also overcome.

Congratulations to SBACV and to the Jornal Vascular Brasileiro. Let’s move forward together, towards full indexation.
