El Dorado Estates Welcome Ambassadors

We are so pleased to present our new Welcome Ambassadors!

Our Ambassadors volunteer to welcome new residents, help them get familiarized with our community, answer questions, and help introduce them to new friends. Our Ambassadors graciously welcome new residents to dine with them in the Dining Room, show them around the community explaining how certain things work such as the Laundry Rooms, transportation sign-up sheets, etc.

Our Ambassadors are upbeat, love living at El Dorado Estates and love to tell people about it! They are friendly and willing to go the extra mile. Even if you’ve lived at El Dorado Estates for quite some time, they are here to help in any way they can.

If you have a question or need a recommendation for local doctors, specialists, etc., they might be able to steer you in the right direction.

We’d like to thank our Ambassadors for their generous kindness (pictured left to right): Jerry Harrington, Al Johnson, Charlotte Jarwin, Doreen and Steve Mykytyn, June Ericksen, Joanie Sindelar, Dick Fairty, Loretta Lima, Judy Canclini, Maria Stahl (not pictured) and Joan Trotter (not pictured).

Ambassadors, you are making such a big difference!

First Ever Chopped Competition:

El Dorado Estates vs. Camden Springs

El Dorado Estates and sister property Camden Springs came together for our first Chop Competition and would soon prove itself to NOT be a ‘flash in the pan.’ This was an opportunity to have some fun while watching talented chefs showcase their culinary skills. Featured was Executive Chef Michael Cerezo Fox and his Sous Chef Peggy of Camden Springs, both eager to get their chop on, and our own Executive Chef Carlos Pizana, chomping at the bit and accompanied by his Sous Chef, resident, LaJune Howle. To kick things off, Chef Erma unveiled a mystery basket which was revealed to contain three types of seafood: Shrimp, snapper, and fresh crab. Nearby was a table full of fruits and vegetables such as: Apples, figs, grapes, bananas, tomatoes, tri-colored bell peppers, zucchini, garlic and more. The contestants had no prep time nor knowledge of the ingredients with which they could possibly be working. Our contestants huddled up with their Sous to brainstorm and discuss possible options from the ingredients provided. Both Chef teams had 60 minutes to come up with a delicious dish for our three resident

judges to taste, enjoy and score. The Chefs prepped to make the ‘jump out of the frying pan and into the fire.’ Time to turn up the

heat, stir the pot and get to it. The timer was set to 60 minutes, and the Chefs went to work prepping and chopping, dicing, dipping, heating, frying, etc. The goal was to prepare a tasty, enticing, distinctively, mouth- watering dish from the given ingredients.

The Activity Room was a flurry of interested and hungry onlookers, staff and hopeful foodies all awaiting the opportunity to sample the Chef’s mouthwatering masterpieces.

A bouquet of buttery, briny, delectable aromas filled olfactory senses as well as the Activity Room, then wafted through hallways settling into corridors, crevices and common spaces.

Not a single sniffer was concealed from the deluge of intoxicating aromas prompting flavors to dance on taste buds.

Watching these talented masters at work was a treat for many of us, especially those who enjoy Chef Carlos cooking regularly.

Soon enough, the hour of power had come to an end and it all boiled down to the judges discerning pallets.

Simmer down now, I’m getting to the best part. Chef Michael created an exquisite, mouth-watering seafood bisque while Chef Carlos boasted a Jamaican, pan fried, snapper topped with garlic shrimp.

Make no bones, the judges decision was not cut and dried. Chef Michael and Peggy from Camden Springs were declared winners for our first ever Chop-Off event. Thanks to everyone

involved in planning, prepping and staging this super fun event. And a special thank you to Chef Carlos for all the hard work and time spent cooking nutritious and delicious meals for El Dorado Estates’ residents and staff.

The audience are all geared up to cheer both teams on.

Thanksgiving by the Numbers

The first Thanksgiving festivities took place over three days in the autumn of 1621 and included 50 Pilgrims and 90 members of the Wampanoag tribe. Here are some more holiday facts to share over your feast.

• About 95% of American households say they celebrate Thanksgiving.

• A majority of those people spend the day with family.

“Friendsgiving,” which is sharing a Thanksgiving meal with friends, is also popular.

• The American Automobile

Association predicts an estimated 50 million people will travel at least 50 miles to reach their holiday destination.

• Nearly 90% of those celebrating Thanksgiving eat turkey, whether roasted or deep-fried, according to the National Turkey Federation.

The average weight of a bird bought for the meal is 16 pounds.

• The Butterball Turkey Talk-Line answers more than 100,000 calls each November and December from people needing cooking advice.

• Three-quarters of those surveyed said they enjoyed Thanksgiving leftovers more than the

actual meal.

• The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade took place in New York City in 1924. Today, the parade attracts 3.5 million spectators along its 2.5-mile route, and another 50 million people watch it on television.

Ferry Ride and a Day Trip to San Francisco

On Wednesday, September 25th, nine noble El Dorado Estate souls, steadfast in their resolve to enjoy the San Francisco Bay, set their course, steadied their gaze, and rose before dawn to brave the day!

Fresh coffee in one hand, hot, ham and cheese croissant in the other, they settled in for the 1.5 hour drive to the Vallejo Ferry.

Pier 39 in San Francisco was our final destination. In ED Hills, the current temperature was 56 and the temperature in San Francisco would climb to 93 degrees by mid day.

Our crew, determined to make our 9:30 a.m. Vallejo departure, hustled to get passengers loaded and on the road by 7:30 a.m.

Our land vessel, a 21-passenger bus, piloted by M.J. effortlessly criss-crossed the freeways at speeds reflecting respect for California highway laws, as well as morning coffee sippers.

We reached Vallejo Harbor in plenty of time to board the new ferry, ship, Pyxis. We settled in for the hour long cruise to Pier 39.

The sea-worthy vessel bustled and clamored with tourists, families, business folk and ladies who lunch, all like us, headed to work or play in the Windy City for the day.

The Captain pulled anchor at 9:30 a.m. and set course for Pier 41. The vessel’s name is Latin for a constellation meaning ‘mariners compass.’ She is one of three in a fleet recently acquired by the city. She is super clean, expansive and has an open feel.

Everyone who rides will have a lovely experience. The ride was particularly smooth and seemingly without much effort or noise reached a cruising speed of 40 mph or 35 knots.

The barista on board serving morning coffee and pastries, and informed us that Pyxis represents the start of a significant fleet expansion for Vallejo/Mare Island.

Before we knew it, we were docked, then disembarking and setting our various courses for a day of fun shenanigans and 20th century tomfoolery.

Several split off from the group; others stayed together and went on to enjoy lunch at Fog Harbor. Our group was the first to arrive and be served. By the time we finished our lunch, the restaurant was full. There is nothing like piping hot New England clam chowder served in a bowl of world famous San Francisco sourdough bread. There was time after lunch to explore the pier. There was plenty of people watching to enjoy. Some braved the Ghirardelli Chocolate Shop, while others went to the fruit market for some huge donut pears.

Last stop was a San Francisco treat, watching the sea lions romp, play, and tease one another in their attempts to find a resting spot on the floating docks. Their barks, groans and silly antics gathered a tourist crowd rivaling that of a talented street performer.

By the time we re-boarded at 3 p.m., it looked as if everyone was gently sun-kissed and super ready to make our return trip home.

M.J. couldn’t resist a bakers dozen of hot, gooey, fresh, powder sugar sprinkled beignets to share with the group on the way home. Rosie had some cold waters in an ice chest and they nibbled, sipped and slept on the drive back to El Dorado Hills.

This was a trip to remember.
