Some aspects of the State of Amazonas

AM is the Federal unit of Brazil

With the biggest territorial extension and

This State is the 2

nd

lesser in populational density

It has also the lesser ratio nº of municipalities (or cities as used

in Brazil) / territorial extension

(3)

Some aspects of the State of Amazonas

With the very special and strong contribution of Manaus Free

Trade Zone,

AM is the Federal Unit that has the bigger participation of the

manufacturing activity in the value added (VA) of its economy

(and

by

consequence,

in

the

GDP):

In

2012,

AM’s

manufacturing represented 24,1% of VA, while the Brazil

indicador was 13,0% of VA

The State has also the capital that more concentrate the

economy of its state in Brazil: 77,7% of GDP

Amazonas and ZFM’s Manaus Industrial Pole

Industrial Density

The ZFM’s Manaus Industrial Pole (PIM) is usually seen as a kind of maquilla, with

little value-added to each R$ 1,00 produced.

Applying the idea of industrial density, it’s possible to compare Brazil and Amazonas’

manufacturing activities with PIA/ IBGE data:

Value of Gross Industrial Production (VGIP)

Cost of Industrial Operations (CIO),

and CIO is part of Intermediate Consumption

Value of Industrial Transformation (VIT = VGIP – CIO), a proxy of the value added

Industrial Density Index: VIT/ VGIP

Amazonas – Industrial Density Index

Notes and the 2003’s inflexion

From 1996 to 2003, the Amazonas’ index reduced and it increased since then.

In 2006, 2007, the Amazonas’ manufacturing started to incorporate more value for

each R$ 1,00 produces than Brazil.

If the manufacture of refined petroleum products is excluded (it isn’t an activity with

ZFM’s incentives), this result is maintained.

What happened with the ZFM in 2003?

The ZFM’s expiration date was changed, from 2013 to 2023 (it was changed again in

2014, from 2023 to 2073).

The Federal Government adjusted the contributions PIS and COFINS – until that, an

intermediate good enterprise payed less than one in ZFM when selling to a firm in

ZFM

The tax incentives conceived by the State of Amazonas Government was improved,

including the adoption of tax deferment to the ICMS (state level VAT) for intermediate

goods

A Deep Look at the Industry Density Index

The Three Bigger Manufacuring Activities are

Manufacture of beverage (pulled by extract of guaraná)

Manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (prominence of TV, video

and sound equipments)

Manufacture of other transport equipment (prominence of motorcycles)

They experienced more density until 2010, but the maintenance it’s not clear since then

Conclusions

From the PIA/ IBGE data, the perception of PIM as a kind of maquila is uncorrect.

Amazonas, mostly PIM, started do agreggated more than Brazil for each R$ 1,00

produced.

The changes occurred in 2003 can explain the (VIT/ VGIP) inflexion, with more

value-added

The industrial density index in Brazil reduced and didn´t recovered the 1996’s level

The beverage industry contributed a lot to the result and it’s a link between the

special economic zone and regional activities

From 2003 to 2010, the electronic complex and the motorcycle industry also

concurred to the index’s improvement.
