An Important Moment

T

he Revista Odonto Ciência (also known as Journal of Dental Science since 2007) lives a historical and magic moment: it has been accepted for indexing in SciELO. This achievement occurred exactly this year, when the journal celebrates its 25th anniversary, and makes us all proud to

have our journal included in a selected group of dental journals. Such indexing is a turning point for the life of an editor and a journal, because it represents overcoming many editorial limitations: few submissions, low visibility and encouragement, among others.

When the irst issue of the Revista Odonto Ciência was

launched in 1986, we did not anticipate the journey it would

follow in its 25 years of uninterrupted scientiic publications. I had the privilege of directing the journal in the irst 21 years of this long period, overcoming many dificulties. The irst of them was to win the irst three numbers (challenge made

by the University Rector at that time, Brother Prof. Norberto Rauch) when the journal was launched. After that, the

editorial team succeeded in many other tasks: increasing the

number of submissions (allowing a more qualiied selection)

and issues per year, inviting international reviewers and board members, launching the twin online journal etc. The inclusion of our journal in important indexing services and databases was also achieved: BBO, LILACS and Latindex. One database was still missing: SciELO. To be accepted for

inclusion in this database, the journal should fulill strict criteria according to international standards of scientiic

publication. It took us several years and attempts to reach the requirements necessary for indexing. And in 2011 this

important moment inally arrived.
