Professor J.W. Sander
Professor Josemir W. Sander, or Ley Sander, as he is usually known, has been named recipient of the 2009 Ep-ilepsy Research Recognition Award for Clinical Science, conferred by the American Epilepsy Society (AES). Sand-er is well known in the world for his pioneSand-er research in the epidemiology and treatment of epilepsies particu-larly in developing countries1. He was born in Brazil, in
Rio Grande do Sul State and graduated from the Medical School of the Federal University of Paraná, in 1981. Here, he completed his Medical Residency in Internal Medicine in 1983 and then moved to London, UK, to the presti-gious Chalfont Centre for Epilepsy and the National Hos-pital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Sander become PhD - Doctor of Philosophy - in 1994 at the Faculty of Medicine, of the University of London, MRCP - Member of the Royal College of Physicians - in 2000 - at the Roy-al College of Physicians, and FRCP - Fellow of the RoyRoy-al College of Physicians - in 2005 - at the Royal College of Physicians, in London, UK2. Sander published more than
300 papers, most of them in journals with high impact, several books and over hundred book chapters, mostly about epilepsy. Sander was editor of Epigraph, the news-letter of the International League against Epilepsy and he is Member of the Editorial Board and Reviewer of several medical journals around the world2. Neurolo-gy and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London and Chal-font Centre for Epilepsy, ChalChal-font St. Peter, UK. He is also Director for Scientific Research, at SEIN - the Epi-lepsy Institute of the Netherlands Foundation, Heemst-ede, the Netherlands, since 2007, and is the Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Neurosciences, Queen Square, London, UK2. Two years ago Sander had his profile
en-titled “Ley Sander: the boy from Brazil”, published in the Lancet Neurology and in the end of this Sander said “Of-ten neurologists can not make that much difference apart from diagnosing the disease, but epilepsy is one condi-tion where you can do something and change the lives of people”3. We feel that professor Sander, currently one of
the most famous epilepsy experts in the world, makes a great difference in World Neurology and Brazilian Neu-rology is very proud of him.
