PREFÁCIO
Minha fascinação por Paulo começou há cerca de 40 anos. Já na idade em que fazia o curso secundário impressionava-me a obra missionária de Paulo, particularmente suas longas viagens e seu êxito em estabelecer o cristianismo na Europa. Durante meus estudos su periores essa fascinação aprofundou-se, quando comecei a apreciar algumas coisas de Paulo, o teólogo.
Sua profunda reflexão teológica, combinada com sua sensibili dade para o tratamento de problemas muito humanos, sua discussão aberta e sua visão pastoral “tocaram-me” em muitos pontos. Como professor universitário, lecionei a respeito de Paulo e sua teologia por mais de vinte e cinco anos, constantemente voltando a ele, ao l.ratar de uma série de temas diferentes. E as aulas se tornaram, nssim espero, cada vez mais ricas, à medida que investigava mais e mais aspectos da teologia de Paulo.
O diálogo com a teologia de Paulo tornou-se mais sério em mea dos da década de 70 e no início dos anos 80. Meus trabalhos sobre
Jesus and the Spirit (1975), Unity and Diversity in the New Testament
(1977) e Christology in the Making (1980) levaram-me a descobrir o pensamento de Paulo em níveis cada vez mais profundos. “A nova perspectiva acerca de Paulo” introduzida por E.P. Sanders no seu
Paul and the Palestinian Judaism (1977) obrigou-me a repensar tudo
c! levou-me, através de estudo minucioso do incidente de Antioquia (({1 2,11-14), em 1980, a profunda reavaliação da atitude e do rela cionamento de Paulo com seus conacionais judeus cristãos e sua reli gião antepassada, trabalho que ainda continua. A preparação do meu primeiro comentário maior sobre Romanos (1988), obrigou-me a es tudar intensamente Gálatas, que aparece no meu Jesus, Paul and
lhe Law (1990) e no subseqüente comentário Galatians (1993). O
tam-bém aumentou minha familiaridade pormenorizada com o pensa mento paulino tardio. Os tratados mais breves de 1 Coríntios e Efésios ajudaram a assegurar amplitude de conhecimentos pormenorizados do corpus paulino. Tudo isso foi constantemente estimulado pela tro ca de idéias em sala de aula, trabalhos de pós-graduação sobre Pau lo, e contínuo envolvimento com seminários nas reuniões anuais da Society of New Testanient Studies e da Society for Biblical Literature. Tenho imensas dívidas com os membros de todas estas atividades.
Há longo tempo desejava eu desenvolver minhas anotações de aula, já muito revisadas, num estudo completo da teologia de Paulo. Então uma iminente revisão radical do programa de matérias da uni versidade veio dar o estímulo final, com um período de licença (páscoa e verão de 1996) que deu a ocasião necessária. Quando chegou o tem po de começar a licença para a pesquisa, meus sentimentos evocaram em minha mente a imagem de um rio alimentado por muitos riachos, mas cujo fluxo fora retido fazendo o volume e a pressão subir. Às vezes parecia-me que a represa estouraria, e os parágrafos iniciais (§2) fo ram compostos em minha mente muito antes de, finalmente, sentar- me em casa, no meu velho Mac Plus. Cinco meses de redação altamen te concentrada possibilitaram-me completar a primeira redação (exceto §1 e §25) e deram, espero, ao texto grau de consistência e coerência que em outras condições teria sido difícil conseguir.
Nessa redação tive que tomar várias decisões difíceis. Uma, já premeditada muito tempo antes, era a de tomar Romanos como uma espécie de gabarito e sobre ela tentar a exposição mais completa de toda a teologia de Paulo. Tento explicar e justificar essa decisão no Prólogo (§1). O valor desse método está em que permite a exposição continuada dos temas que o próprio Paulo desenvolve em Romanos. Mas também significa que o tratamento de outras cartas interrompe- se mais e nesse sentido é menos satisfatório. Isso é inevitável no trata mento temático da teologia de Paulo. O procedimento alternativo de analisar cada carta sucessivamente tem suas próprias desvantagens.
A segunda decisão importante foi a de tratar os assuntos com pormenorização suficiente para deixar clara a lógica teológica (de Paulo) e a (minha) lógica exegética. Tratamentos de temas particulares que supusessem o conhecimento de discussões mais antigas tornariam o livro menor, mas este não seria tão completo em si mesmo. Por essa mesma razão incluí os textos-chave, às vezes em citações bastante longas. Sendo alguém que para ler livros tem que aproveitar toda
sor-íq de ocasiões disponíveis estou bem consciente de que os leitores nem
sempre têm à mão um texto das cartas de Paulo. Há, então, o perigo de que o texto apenas lembrado de memória não esteja de acordo com o ponto em discussão e conseqüentemente a força de tal ponto se per ca. Assim o fator decisivo foi a conveniência do leitor e o desejo de persuasão do autor (e não as muitas páginas extras).
A terceira decisão estava relacionada com a extensão da discus são com colegas especialistas no assunto sobre questões de substân cia e de pormenor. Obviamente tais discussões podem ser interminá veis (como nos mostra o crescente tamanho dos comentários) e o livro já corria perigo de tornar-se demasiadamente longo. As escolhas eram difíceis e a discussão teve que limitar-se a documentar a amplitude da discussão sobre os pontos em estudo. Inevitavelmente as decisões sobre o que incluir, a quem fazer referência etc. foram pessoais e muitas vezes arbitrárias, e só posso pedir desculpas aos que julga rem que ignorei alguns pontos ou contribuições importantes. Espero que as resenhas assinalarão as omissões importantes, que posterior mente poderão ser corrigidas.
A quarta questão foi a do título do livro. Na estreiteza do nosso enfoque (ou da nossa arrogância), nós, estudiosos do Novo Testamento ou dos primórdios do cristianismo, temos a tendência de pensar que uma referência à “teologia de Paulo” é auto-explicativa. Tal título, porém, ajudaria para que o apelo do livro permanecesse limitado a círculos ligados a estudos bíblicos ou à Igreja. Fora de tais círculos, “Teologia de Paulo” provavelmente despertaria a pergunta: O que é teologia e quem é Paulo? Isso, se provocasse alguma reação. O título “Teologia de São Paulo” seria mais reconhecível. Mas o velho protes tante que há em mim ainda duvida se o Paulo que se dirigia a todos os cristãos como santos receberia com agrado um termo usado para designar uma elite cristã. Entretanto, havia uma solução óbvia. Paulo tinha um título que prezava acima de todos os outros e no qual insis tia como sua autodesignação mais regular, ao apresentar-se aos des tinatários das suas cartas. Era “apóstolo”. O termo também era dis tintivo dentro do cristianismo e suficientemente conhecido fora dele. E assim a questão estava resolvida. Somente um título se aplicava:
“A teologia do apóstolo Paulo”.
A primeira versão foi enviada a Eerdmans no fim de setembro de 1996, e numa semana recebi numerosos exemplares em brochura, para uso em aulas e seminários. Agradeço muito a Bill Eerdmans
por ter tornado isso possível, e depois a John Simpson por coordenar a subedição. Assim pude encaminhar vários exemplares a colegas que gentilmente concordaram em ler a primeira versão, usá-los em minhas aulas de graduação (o que na verdade não funcionou) e obter número suficiente de exemplares para o meu seminário de pós-gra- duação de NT em vista da sua utilização no primeiro período (semes tre) (outono de 1996).
Sou mais grato do que posso expressá-lo aos que puderam res ponder nessas diferentes maneiras. Lembro especialmente os pro fessores Paul Achtemeier, Bob Jewett e John Reumann dos Estados Unidos, o professor Eduard Lohse da Alemanha, e o professor Graham Stanton do Reino Unido. Em particular, meu pai de doutorado em tempos antigos, Charlie Moule, leu cada página e numa seqüência de cartas recheadas reuniu meus erros tipográficos, melhorou meu inglês e mandou-me repensar numerosos pontos. Foi bom retomar a velha relação professor-aluno e achá-la ainda tão benéfica como na queles dias de meados da década de 60 em Cambridge, de grata me mória. O seminário de pós-graduação gastou dez semanas colocando a primeira versão sob o microscópio e obrigou-me a esclarecer o que era obscuro e defender melhor (e às vezes abandonar) o que era mais idiossincrásico. Aos meus colegas de outras instituições que não ex perimentaram a sensação desse jogo semana após semana, posso recomendá-la de coração. Os outros membros do seminário não se surpreenderão se faço uma menção particular do meu colega direto, Walter Moberly. O seminário não tardou a seguir um ritual próprio, com a pausa inicial interrompida pela voz delicada de Walter anun ciando que ele tinha “apenas três pontos menores e dois pontos mais importantes a propor”.
A todos os que acabei de mencionar só posso dizer o meu obriga do de todo o coração. Estou bem consciente das muitas maneiras com que o conteúdo e a apresentação das páginas a seguir foram melho radas. As suas contribuições indubitavelmente pouparam-me vários embaraços e com certeza aumentaram o valor do conjunto. Desne cessário dizer que os defeitos e juízos mais questionáveis que ainda restaram são inteiramente meus.
Fiz questão de recorrer ao maior número de comentários e dis cussões possível na primeira versão, não simplesmente para elimi nar as falhas mais óbvias, mas porque desejava concretizar o mais possível a idéia de fazer teologia como um empreendimento
coopera-t,ivo ou diálogo (para usar o “modelo” preferido nas páginas a seguir). Não tenho a ilusão de que o presente livro (ou qualquer outro) é ou pode ser “a última palavra” sobre a teologia de Paulo. Pretende ser, antes, uma contribuição para o diálogo ou discussão em curso sobre o que é/foi a teologia de Paulo e o que a sua contínua relevância é para o estudo e a prática da religião e da teologia. Todos os comentá rios ou críticas que ajudem a melhorar qualquer revisão futura se rão recebidos com gratidão no mesmo espírito.
