D , 2006
is the fifrh intemati onal gathering af scientists and engineers interested in
the fields ofengineering mechanics, design and materiaIs engineering planned for July 24-26,
2006
in the bcautiful city
DfPorto, Portugal. This is a well-established meeting with fo llowers
from some 35 nations.
The first conference af this series was held in Toronto in 1996 and attracted over ] 50
delegates. The second was organized
by
Professors .1.8. Hull and R. Gentle in Nottingham in
1998. The third was 'organized by Professor S.A. Meguid in Orlando in 2000. The fourlh \Vas
organized
by
Dr. T. Mori and Profes sor H. Fujii in Nagoya, Japan in June 2002. These
meetings resu lted
[Tomthe belief that af those disciplines associated with advanced product
design and manufacture, engineering mechanics and materiaIs engineering have made the
1110st signiticant advance in recent years. Important and dramatic improvements in component
design cnn be made by the use of the Iatest advances in mechanics and materiais. Indeed, as a
result of the activities in these three important fields: Mecl1anics, Materiais and Design, lhe
International Joumal of Mechanics and MateriaIs in Design was established in 2004. With
Professor lF.
Silva Gomes being an impanant member af the Editorial Board and Professor
Shaker A. ivleguid being its Editor-in-Chief.
lt
is with this in mind that this
Fiftlr I/ltel'/1atio/1111
C01~rel'ellceOJ1 ilfechanics alld Materiais
i11 Desigll
is organized. The purpose is to bring together scientists and engineers from the
mechanics and materiais commullities to present their latest results and discuss new advances
over a broad range oftopics dealing with analytical, numerical and experimental techniques in
mechanics and advi.1llces in materiaIs' tcchnology as well as case studies. VI/e have done our
best to provi de the delegares with an cnvironment conducive to exchange of knowledge,
networking and making new friends.
\Ve take this to thank our colleagues \V110 contributed considerably to the event by organizing
topical symposia and by hei ping
tiSto launch this important meeting. We are truly grateful for
their efforts. We aIs o wish our overseas friends to have a great time in Portugal. We wish you
ali a happy and successful slay in Porto.

Safe design is a design process that eliminates hazord s, or mmltTIlzes potential risks,
by
invo!ving decision makers and considering the life cycle af structures and materiais. Safe
design approach wil1 genemte a \vell-informed design option that should eliminate these
potenHa! problems to those \Vho makes lhe product and to those who use it.
Structu ra\ and materia l safely in design will
cave r the design aspects af safe slructures, using
steel, concrete, timber and composite material elemems. Accidental conditions should be
carefully understood and considered according to the safety stondards and regulations.
Advances in stalldards and regulations should permanentJy ensure safety with the best
praclices and methods. Advanced analysis methods shou ld be pennanently improved and used
lo prevent such potential risk in slructures Jlld materiaIs. Designers shou ld guarantee
stl1.lclural integrity and prevent structura l damage.

SYNOPSIS
Partial1y encased beams are composed struchlral elements widely used for industrial buildings
with increasing slgnificance. Composite beams may be designed for service load conditiol1s
without the col!aborative cantributian af slabs. Instability problems may aceur because
concrete may not have tbe age to resist and also beeause the concrete may slip oveI' steel,
crack or crush. Lateral torsional buckling is an instability limit state that may oceur in these
situations.
This papel' presents a material and geometric l10n linear tinite element model for the desigll af
lateral torsianal buekling resistance of partially eneased steel beam without encasernent
reinforcements. The steel part
ar
the eamposed sectian will be modelled
by
shell, eoncrete by
three. dimensional solids and the bond contaet with nOl1 linear spring finite elements. Failure
af conerete will also be predicted when the beam is subjeeted to a constant bending moment.

Slabs may not transmit the stabilizing effect to prevent lateral tarsianal buckling
(LTB).
Also,
eonc.reling the steel beam within 7 ar 8 days provides less torsional stiffness than after 28
days (Boissonade et ai, 2004). This instability phenomenon is respansible for a simultaneous
lateral displacement and cross-section rotation. This means that bending around the minor
axis and torsion ahout the longitudinal axis of the element are involved.
This work intends to be the preliminary phase af a full-scale test program in (ire conditions,
complemented with numerical research and intends to deal \Vith the interaction between
concrete 3nd steel, tinding failure af concrete that may ocem during instability. Non linear
