I got tired of watching children die. As a teacher I had known for a very long time that there was a crisis, not only in Detroit but nationally. A social economic crisis for the following generations, and that crisis measures would have to be taken in order to save the young people who would inherit the world as we left it. That was not happening. Politicians and civic leaders, educational administrators fail to address this crisis for selfish reasons, a major disservice to the youth of the city of Detroit. And as a result conditions in the city of

Detroit were spiraling into a condition of hopelessness. I wanted to go to some place where there was hope. An alternative to the hopelessness I confronted in Detroit. My experiences in travelling to France and the E.U. had opened my eyes to a world of other possibilities. Though not perfect, there was at least a sense of hope.

which will allow them to effectively put their energies into making a difference in the U.S. But the U.S. is only part of the world and, like it or not, the world as a hole is connected. With the years that I have left in my life I can make a better contribution to a better world from the E.U., than I can from the U.S. Indirect instead of direct. Hope is fluent over time. Detroit may be resurgent in twenty years but I won't live to see it. My daughter, and my granddaughter will.
