Abstract: All the activities and development processes existing on the territory of the municipality of Subotica result in certain effects on the environment. Based on the analysis of the present environmental state, the authors identified certain influences on the quality of the surface and ground water. It is necessary to pay attention much more on the problem of the pollution and protection of the surface and ground water, considering insufficiency of water recourses on this territory, as well as its threatened quality.

Keywords: Municipality of Subotica, Water Quality, Sources of Pollution.

QUALITY OF THE SURFICE AND GROUND WATER IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF SUBOTICA

Quality of the surface and ground water in the municipality of Subotica is significantly imperiled. The presence of some heavy metals in ground water, i.e. iron and arsenic, mostly appears as a consequence of the natural characteristics of this area, while presence of some polluters in the surface waters predominantly has origin in different human activities.

Emission of unrefined (or partially refined) waste water in recipients is the main cause of surface water pollution. Sources of water pollution are located in settlements (municipal waste water from Subotica and Palic) and industry (industrial waste water). The most important recipient for municipal waste waters is Lake Palic (the first sector of the lake). Its water quality mostly depends on the efficiency of the waste water purification system, located in the zone of the First sector of the Lake. Considering low efficiency of this purification system in the last period, the water quality of the Lake Palic significantly differs from regulation standards. The main characteristics of the water quality of the Lake Palic are: organic pollution (high precence of nutrients) and eutrophication.
