 Estrutura e uso básico do verbo haver / there to be (presente, passado e futuro)

AMPLIANDO SEUS CONHECIMENTOS

Em inglês, quando desejamos expressar a existência de algo ou alguém, devemos empregar there + verbo to be. Essa construção equivale ao verbo haver ou existir em português.

Trata-se da combinação da palavra there (que, normalmente, significa lá, ali, mas que não tem tradução nesse caso) com o verbo to be: THERE TO BE. Daí, surge um pequeno problema de concordância, pois ela não se apresenta da mesma forma nas duas línguas. Em português, o verbo haver, com sentido de existir, é impessoal e, portanto, não tem sujeito. Por isso, fica sempre na 3ª pessoa do singular.

Exemplos:

Há uma flor no vaso. Há dez flores no vaso.

Em inglês, a concordância se faz com o substantivo que acompanha o there to be: ou seja, se o substantivo estiver no plural, o verbo também deverá ficar no plural.

Exemplos:

There is one flower in the vase. There are ten flowers in the vase.

Temos então:

Presente Singular: There is

Plural: There are

Passado Singular: There was

Como você observou, a flexão ocorre no verbo to be que compõe a expressão. Veja o quadro com as formas afirmativa, negativa e interrogativa:

Presente

Afirmativa There is a student in the classroom.

Negativa There is not / isn’t a student in the classroom.

Interrogativa Is there a student in the classroom?

Afirmativa There was a student in the classroom.

Negativa There was not / wasn’t a student in the classroom. Interrogativa Was there a student in the classroom?

No tempo verbal do futuro, entretanto, o verbo there to be não se flexiona, ou seja, tem a mesma forma para o singular e o plural.

Exemplos:

There will be a taxi at 8 pm in front of your house. (Haverá um taxi às 20h em frente à sua casa.)

There will be thousands of people in next week’s street parade. (Haverá milhares de pessoas no desfile de rua da próxima semana.)

Futuro

Afirmativa There will be a travel agent at the airport.

Negativa There will not / won’t be a travel agent at the airport. Interrogativa Will there be a travel agent at the airport?
