What large corpora are telling us about ‘language’

P e rh a p s th e m o s t im p o rta n t p a ra m e te r in th e n e g o tia tio n o f d is c o u rs e lie s b e tw e e n i n c lu s io n a n d e x c lu s io n . In th e o ry , a ‘la n g u a g e ’ is b y n a tu re in c lu siv e , j u s t as ‘c o m m u n ic a tio n ’ in a c tu a l d is c o u rs e im p lie s a ‘c o m m u n ity ’ a n d b e in g ‘sh a re d in c o m m o n ’ tru e to th e e ty m o lo g y o f th e w o rd .
