The article deals with the discussion as one of the interactive methods of teaching foreign languages to future specialists of international relations department. Main types of discussions have been identified and characterized as well as peculiarities of the practical application of this interactive method of study in the classroom have been described. The attention has been paid to the role of this method as a means of creating favourable conditions to improve professional and communicative competence in training graduates of international relations department. The role of the teacher as a manager, guide, initiator, referee and a summarizer has been analyzed. It has been proved that discussion as an interactive method of teaching foreign languages helps to stimulate conceptual thinking, sharpens logical reasoning, encourages the development of listening and oratory skills, develops rational arguments.
