From Monday of t his week, Pr ofe ssor Sim on M e r ca do will t ake up his new role as t he Associat e Dean of School, replacing Rebecca Taylor w ho left NBS at t he end of Sept em ber. Please j oin m e in welcom ing Sim on int o t he

role. I know t hat it is his int ent ion t o speak wit h divisional groups at first opport unit y and t o m eet as m any m em bers of t he School as possible over t he com ing w eeks. Sim on has previously served t he School in a num ber of capacit ies, including his m ost recent role as Head of I nt ernat ional Affairs and Ext ernal Relat ions.

As a Head of Division and Program m e Direct or before t hat , Sim on has a breadt h of experience t hat he will channel int o t he Associat e Dean’s role. Sim on has experience of m any NTU- level boards. The NBS undergraduat e program m e port folio has once again proved t o be a popular choice for st udent s. As well as achieving forecast num bers wit hout t he need for clearing, t he int ake achievem ent of st udent s has significant ly im proved wit h all undergraduat e ent rant s achieving a m inim um of 280 UCAS point s and t he average across t he port folio set t o be higher t han 300. As a consequence a posit ive shift in t he st andard of our int ake affords t he opport unit y t o furt her im prove st udent academ ic achievem ent and hence t he em ployabilit y of our graduat es.

Corporat e part ners and facult y m em bers part icipat ed in a m orning program m e feat uring key not e cont ribut ions from Richard St raub, President of t he Aust ria-based societ y, and Toon Clerckx, Alliance Boot s’ Finance Direct or ( Healt h & Beaut y Division) .

Toon provided a fascinat ing case st udy on how Boot s has developed a cult ure of em bedded Corporat e Social Responsibilit y across it s organisat ion sharing w ider t hought s on t he st rat egic value of responsible business act ion. Richard linked t he Boot s case and ot hers t o Pet er Drucker’s philosophy on responsible leadership, rem inding us of t he cont inuing relevance of his work and ‘shared value’ concept .

I n a session m oderat ed by Pr ofe ssor Ge r a r d M cElw e e, senior m anagers from around t he region w ere invit ed t o discuss challenges and opport unit ies surrounding Corporat e Social Responsibilit y wit h t hese leading business figures. Mem bers of NBS facult y will be at t ending t he Annual Drucker Forum in Vienna lat er t his aut um n.

I n a relat ed developm ent , NBS has t abled an applicat ion for m em bership of The European Academ y of Business in Societ y ( EABI S) , which is an int egral part of t he wider European Business Cam paign on Corporat e Social Responsibilit y.

EABI S aim s t o m obilise over half a m illion business people and ot her st akeholders on t he t opic of Corporat e Social Responsibilit y and t o work wit h academ ic and corporat e part ners in sharing good pract ice, t eaching and learning m at erials focused on CSR and business et hics. Thanks t o D r Pe t r a M olt h a n - H ill and ot hers who have worked hard on t his m em bership bid which show cases NBS’s success in incorporat ing t hese issues int o t he curriculum .

The Universit y of Brasilia, est ablished in 1962, belongs t o t he t op Higher Educat ion inst it ut ions in t he count ry. At present t im e t he universit y has over 27,000 st udent s st udying across a wide r ange of undergraduat e and post graduat e program m es w it h 1,900 m em bers of academ ic st aff.

I n Washingt on DC, m eet ings w ere held w it h policy- m akers and t he k ey agencies for biofuels policy, t he US Depart m ent of Agricult ure, Depar t m ent of Energy and Env ironm ent al Prot ect ion Agency. The visit finished wit h a sem inar at The World Bank.

I n a session ent it led “ Get t ing Biofuels Policies Finally Right ?” , t he plat form w as shar ed w it h Professor Har ry de Gort er ( Cornell Univer sit y) . dem and t rends, and using dat a collect ed from t he m ar ket place it self, from j our nalist s and cust om er s t he st udent s were able t o provide t he com pany a set of pract ical recom m endat ion based on product char act er ist ics, and also suggest pr om ot ional act ivit ies suit able for a sm all business. t eam , said “ t he st udent s found t he w or k challenging but t heir abilit y t o work t oget her creat ively as a t eam w as really enhanced, and t hey enj oyed w or king out solut ions t hat couldn’t be found in a t ext book” .

I n t he m eant im e, MSc I nt ernat ional Finance st udent s undert ook work which helped local food com pany, Nk ono, by dev eloping an elect ronic cost ing m odel for a new pr oduct . Buisiness ow ner, Alain Job, had been given addit ional help by t he proj ect t o develop a range of t ast y snacks inspir ed by his Cam er oon backgr ound, t hat could be served in banana leaves. Hav ing dev eloped his product Alain needed help t o ensure t hat he could analyse his cost s and r ev enues in a user- friendly and m oder n way . The st udent s helped by providing exact ly t his.

M ich a e l M cCa n n, w ho supervised t he st udent group said “ t he st udent s benefit t ed from having pr act ical exper ience in a business environm ent which cont r ibut ed great ly t o helping Alain develop his business m odel and helping him get closer t o bringing his product t o m arket ” . Bot h Trent Upholst eries and Nkono have provided glowing feedback .

I n August , t he Econ om ic St r a t e gy Re se a r ch Bu r e a u was est ablished wit hin t he Business School’s Econom ics Division. The ESRB is a new r esear ch unit t hat w ill under t ak e com m er cial consult ancy and r esear ch pr oj ect s and t o cont ribut e t o NBS’s academ ic act ivit ies.

The t hree core m em bers of t he ESRB worked in t he St rat egy, Research and Ev aluat ion Team at t he East Midlands Dev elopm ent Agency ( EMDA) , where t hey w ere responsible for undert ak ing, designing and m anaging lar ge scale r esear ch and evaluat ion proj ect s and advising on public policy developm ent .

The est ablishm ent of t he ESRB builds on t he decision t o host a dat abase of research, evaluat ion and st rat egy resources produced by EMDA in t he NTU I nst it ut ional Reposit ory ( I Rep) , providing a r esource t o st aff, st udent s and t he public t hat includes exam ples of recent applied research – of part icular relevance t o t he Econom ics Division’s t eaching pr ogr am m es.

The Bureau will be undert aking ad hoc research, evaluat ion and consult ancy proj ect s on an on- going basis and is keen t o w or k w it h colleagues in NBS and across NTU m ore w idely on bot h com m ercial and academ ic proj ect s. I n addit ion, it w ill be offer ing a r ange of subscr ipt ion based econom ic briefing product s and analyt ical suppor t for ext er nal client s.

The annual BAM confer ence w as held t his year at t he Ast on Business School in Bir m ingham bet ween 13t h and 15t h of Sept em ber w it h a record num ber of

delegat es at t ending despit e t he curr ent econom ic out look.

This confer ence m arked a special m ilest one for BAM, as t hey are celebrat ing t heir 25t h Anniv er sar y t his y ear . The Anniv er sar y Celebrat ions, com bined w it h recor d paper subm issions m ean t hat BAM 2011 w as one of t heir m ost successful conference t o dat e.

Over 700 people at t ended at t he conference, w hich t ook “ Building and Sust aining High Perform ance Organisat ions in a Challenging Environm ent ” as it s t hem e. Mult iple sessions at t he confer ence explored t he challenging environm ent s facing m anagers at all lev els as public sect or cut s begin t o bit e int o m any econom ies and priv at e sect or or ganisat ions seek t o clim b out of t he r ecession.

The cont ribut ions from NBS t his year w ere prim arily t o t wo of t he regular m ainst ream t racks; “ Per form ance Managem ent ” and “ Public Managem ent and Gover nance” . H a r r y Ba r t on led t he w ay cont ribut ing papers t o bot h t racks. The first w as a full paper co-aut hor ed w it h D r N e st or V a le r o- Silva ent it led “ I m proving Police Perform ance t hrough a Part nership appr oach” ; a case st udy based on cr im e pr event ion, w hile t he second w as a single aut hor developm ent paper on t he highly cont roversial reform s t o t he police ent it led “ Building High Perform ance Police Syst em s in an er a of financial const raint s” .

Finally, Harry’s form er colleagues at t he Car diff Business School w ill be host ing t he 2012 BAM confer ence bet w een 11t h and 13t h Sept em ber 2012, w it h t he t hem e for next year being “ Managem ent Research Revisit ed: Prospect s for Theor y and Pract ice” . The decision t o hold t he conference at Cardiff was m ade ear lier in t he year, by BAM Council. Professor Mart in Kit chener of t he Cardiff Business School com m ent ed:

" We are absolut ely delight ed t hat Car diff Business School has been select ed t o host t he BAM annual confer ence in 2012.
