What is freedom?

What is freedom, I mean, freedom to act? Have you ever really stopped to think about it? Are you free? Are you free to do anything you want wherever and whenever you want? No. Can you imagine a family eating in the middle of the road, or some nudists running happily at the park? You may think “Yes, why would people do that, anyway?”, right? “You’re giving crazy examples!” But that’s the point: freedom is limited. We live in a society where one’s freedom can only go so far; otherwise, it would be total chaos all around. You are limited in a lot of ways when it comes to your freedom to act because you have to respect everyone else’s freedom. It’s a cultural thing. How many times have you felt your freedom threatened by someone else? A lot of times, right?

What about freedom to think? You will say “sure, I can think whatever I like!” Ok, but we are bombarded by the news, TV commercials, annoying pop-up ads online, and giant billboards trying to sell everything possible all the time every single day. Even on the radio; you can’t just enjoy the music; soon enough you have that loud voice telling you you should do this or buy that at a speed that makes you wonder if that’s really English! Of course all that is going to have a huge impact on your thoughts. Your freedom of thought goes right down to the drain while that supermarket jingle keeps creeping up and driving you nuts. Maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but my point is that our freedom of thought is also limited.

So, the question is…if freedom is so limited, is it really freedom?
