MEMORIAL
MEMORIAL
The Mirim archaeological site is located in the East of the city of São Paulo, in the Ermelino Matarazzo district, and consists of the remains of a home base of the Bandeirantes, explorers who undertook expeditions to the interior lands of what today is Brazilian territory. Dating from the 17th century, the Mirim base was strategically founded close to the navigable river Tietê.
The building fell into gradual decay when the river was being straightened and canalized and the riverbanks were being invaded by illegal occupations. The Brazilian national preservation organ IPHAN realized restoration works in the 1960`s and declared the site as national heritage in 1973. Nevertheless, only a part of the original rammed earth walls are left. Neglected by the lo-cal politics and without public access, the site of approximately 16.000m² lies wedged between a railway line, the Assis Ribeiro Avenue, and the Urutu Street.
The current project is one of a series of urban interventions planned by the Municipal Sec-retary of Culture of São Paulo, emphasizing the human re-urbanisation of public spaces.
Thinking beyond the material preservation of the ruin, Apiacas Architects aim to stimulate a broad public usage of the historic place by combining a variety of functions in the program. The inser-tion of the new elements is simple and direct: a large canopy protects the archaeological remains from the weather and provides a cover for the visitors. Being reminiscent of the original location of the Bandeirantes House, designed to overlook the riverbank for security reasons, the canopy also functions as an outlook platform, which is accessible via a public walkway from the plaza on the upper level of the site, thus taking advantage of the natural slope of the site. The slab of the plaza extends further to form the roof of the other elements of the complex: a multi-functional theatre hall, a foyer with an exhibition space, archaeological workshops, and a reading space, totalling a gross floor area of 2.900 m².
