A COLUNA DE PADRE JEFF
(1) Neste domingo, celebramos a Festa de Cristo Rei. Instituído em 1925, esta festa foi estabelecida pelo Papa Pio XI como um antídoto contra o secularismo, para proclamar, numa maneira impressionante e eficaz, a realeza de Cristo sobre indivíduos, famílias, sociedade, governos e nações. Esta festa, tradicionalmente conhecida como a Solenidade de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, Rei do Universo, é celebrada no último domingo do ano litúrgico.
Os cristãos muito tempo celebram Jesus como Cristo, o Messias, e seu reinado como Rei é celebrado até certo ponto no tempo do Advento (quando os cristãos esperam a Sua segunda vinda na glória), no Natal (quando “nasceu na cidade de David o Rei dos Judeus”), durante a Semana Santa (quando Cristo é o Rei Crucificado), na Páscoa (quando Jesus ressuscitou em poder e glória), e na Ascensão (quando Jesus voltou para a glória que Ele teve com o Pai antes que o mundo foi criado). No entanto, Pio XI queria comemorar especificamente Cristo como Rei, quando o amoroso e misericordioso – e justo – Rei do universo é louvado e glorificado.
Como Papa Bento XVI disse uma vez: “Neste último domingo do Ano Litúrgico, a Igreja convida-nos a celebrar Jesus Cristo como Rei do universo; chama-nos a dirigir o olhar em direcção ao futuro, ou melhor em profundidade, para a meta última da história, que será o reino definitivo e eterno de Cristo.
Estava com o Pai no início, quando o mundo foi criado, e manifestará plenamente o seu domínio no fim dos tempos, quando julgar todos os homens.”
(2) Na próxima semana, começamos o tempo do Advento, que inicia um novo ano litúrgico na Igreja. Um dos símbolos mais populares do Advento é a grinalda do Advento. A iluminação gradual das quatro velas, uma em cada domingo do tempo do Advento, combinada com as cores litúrgicas das velas (três roxa e uma rosa) ajudam a simbolizar não apenas a nossa expectativa e esperança na primeira vinda de nosso Salvador ao mundo, mas também em Sua segunda vinda como Juiz no fim do mundo.

No próximo fim de semana, será exposta uma Árvore de Natal junto do Baptistério com ornamentos e cada um deles indica o tipo de oferta com idade, sexo, e medida duma criança necessitada. Pedimos aos paroquianos para, no final das Missas, tirarem um ornamento e trazerem de volta à “Árvore,” numa caixa ou saco não embrulhados e com o respetivo ornamento colado no exterior. YOUTH-FAITH FORMATION FR. JEFF’S COLUMN
(1) This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. Instituted in 1925, this feast was established by Pope Pius XI as an antidote to secularism, to proclaim in a striking and effective manner Christ’s royalty over individuals, families, society, governments, and nations. This feast, traditionally known as the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, is celebrated on the last Sunday of the liturgical year.
Christians have long celebrated Jesus as Christ, the Messiah, and His reign as King is celebrated to some degree in the season of Advent (when Christians wait for His second coming in glory), in Christmas (when “born this day is the King of the Jews”), during Holy Week (when Christ is the Cru- cified King), on Easter (when Jesus is resurrected in power and glory), and the Ascension (when Jesus returns to the glory He had with the Father before the world was created). However, Pius XI wanted to specifically commemorate Christ as King, when the loving and merciful–and just–king of the universe is praised and glorified.
As Pope Benedict once said: “In this final Sunday of the liturgical year, the Church invites us to celebrate the Lord Jesus as King of the Universe. She calls us to look to the future, or more properly into the depths, to the ultimate goal of history, which will be the definitive and eternal kingdom of Christ. He was with the Father in the beginning, when the world was cre- ated, and He will fully manifest His lordship at the end of time, when He will judge all mankind.”
(2) Next week, we begin the season of Advent, which begins a new liturgical year in the Church. One of the most popular symbols of Advent is the Advent wreath. The gradual lighting of the four candles, one on each Sunday of the Advent season, combined with the liturgical colors of the candles (three purple and one rose) help to symbolize not only our expectation and hope in Our Savior’s first coming into the world, but also in His Second Coming as Judge at the end of the world. During Ad- vent, we pray: Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!

NOVEMBER: MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY
During this month of November, which began with the celebration of All Saints Day and All Souls’ Day, the Church prays for all the dead, especially those souls in purgatory. The names of your beloved deceased on your All Souls Envelopes will be rememebered in prayer at all the Masses throughout the month of November. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let the perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

& return the gift with the ornament on the outside of the package in time for distribution. It is easier if the gifts are in a gift box or bag, unwrapped. Many thanks for your support! Gifts are due by December 16.
