ABSTRACT

Much o f the c r i t i c a l a t t e n t i o n f o c u s e d on B e l l o w ' s n o v e l s d e a l s w i t h h i s p r e o c c u p a t i o n w i t h c o n t e m p o r a r y man as an i n d i v i d u a l . T h i s s t u d y i s an a t t e m p t to show B e l l o w ' s view of man i n h i s c l o s e r e l a t i o n s h i p w i t h c o n t e m p o r a r y so c i e t y t h r o u g h e x a m i n i n g one o f h i s most r e c e n t n o v e l s H e r z o g .

The f i r s t p a r t d i s c u s s e s the r e l a t i o n s h i p : a u t h o r , n o v e l and s o c i a l r e a l i t y c o n s i d e r i n g some s o c i o l o g i c a l con c e p t i o n s o f c o n t e m p o r a r y s o c i e t y as w e l l as e x p o u n d i n g the m e t h o d o l o g i c a l a p p r o a c h w h i c h s e r v e d as the b a s i s f o r the a n a l y s i s o f the novel — G o l d m a n n ' s g e n e t i c s t r u c t u r a l i s m ^

The s e c o n d p a r t d e a l s w i t h the e x a m i n i n g o f Herzog l i m i t i n g to the a n a l y s i s o f the i n t e r n a l s t r u c t u r e o f the n o v e l , r e l a t i n g i t s i m a g i n a r y u n i v e r s e to the p a t t e r n s o f c o n t e m p o r a r y c a p i t a l i s t s o c i e t y . At the l e v e l of a c t i o n , a main m e a n i n g f u l s t r u c t u r e i s d e t a c h e d from the u n i v e r s e o f the n o v e l and d i s c u s s e d i n terms o f a homology between t h i s s t r u t u r e and the s t r u t u r e o f s o c i e t y . 1. I N T R O D U C T I O N

Saul B e l l o w , the c o n t e m p o r a r y A m e r i c a n w r i t e r a w a r d e d the Nobel P r i z e f o r L i t e r a t u r e in 1 9 7 6 , a u t h o r of n o v e l s , p l a y s a n d s h o r t s t o r i e s , .has b e e n e x h a u s t i v e l y studied lately, b o t h f o r his s t y l e a n d his c o n s c i o u s i n v o l v e m e n t w i t h the p r o b l e m s of c o n t e m p o r a r y m a n . W . J . S e w e l l s a y s that "Saul Bellow r e p r e s e n t s a p o s t - m o d e r n w r i t e r , t h a t i s , a w r i t e r w h o s e f i c t i o n has t u r n e d a w a y f r o m a c o n c e r n w i t h s o c i a l v a l u e s to e m b r a c e the i n n e r v a l u e s of the i n d i v i d u a l , "1 I n d e e d , the c r i t i c a l s t u d i e s of Saul B e l l o w as a w r i t e r a n d t h o s e of t h i s l i t e r a r y w o r k w h i c h we h a v e e x a m i n e d , i n c l u d i n g e s s a y s , ar t i d e s , a n d d o c t o r a l t h e s e s , a r e m a i n l y o r i e n t e d t o w a r d s the i d e a of B e l l o w ' s b e i n g an " i n w a r d - t u r n i n g w r i t e r , "2c o m m i t t e d to the a f f i r m a t i o n of the i n d i v i d u a l .

In his c r e e d of a p o s i t i v e affirm a t i o n of l i f e , B e l l o w p l a c e s s u p r e m e v a l u e on the individual, w h o m he c o n s i d e r s c a p a b l e of s e l f - r e a l i z a t i o n , t h r o u g h u n c o n d i t i o n a l f r e e d o m of the s p i r i t ; t h i s a b s o l u t e f r e e d o m b e i n g 'the s t a t e at w h i c h B e l l o w ' s p r o t a g o n i s t s a r r i v e a f t e r fighting o u t all the c o n d i t i o n s i m p o s e d on t h e m , r e a c h i n g t h u s a t r u e r e c o n c i l i a t i o n of the s e l f , in the w o r d s of S e w e l l , " t h r o u g h an a l i e n a t i o n - r e c o n c i l i a t i o n p a t t e r n , " w h i c h c o n s i s t s of

" t e m p o r a r y s e p a r a t i o n f r o m s o c i a l c o n f o r m i t y as a means towards a p r i v a t e r e c o n c i l i a t i o n w i t h soei e ty and. t h e r e i n reconcil iation w i t h the self."1* M u c h of the c r i t i c i s m on B e l l o w t e n d s to see his w o r k in the l i g h t of t h i s p a t t e r n , with social! aspects b e i n g p a r t of i t , b u t n o t the m a i n c o n c e r n .

T h i s s t u d y , n o t q u e s t i o n i n g w h a t has b e e n written about B e l l o w , w h i c h s h o w s a g e n e r a l t e n d e n c y to c o n s i d e r h i m as a w r i t e r w o r r i e d a b o u t m e t a p h y s i c a l a n d e t h i c a l i s s u e s , a i m s to d i s c u s s his v i e w of m a n in c o n t e m p o r a r y s o c i e t y , e x a m i n i n g one of his m o r e r e c e n t novel s : H e r z o g . T h u s i n s t e a d of being worried about the self we will be seeing man as a social person,as part o f s o c i e t y .

On r e a c h i n g t h i s m a i n p u r p o s e — the a p p r e h e n s i o n of B e l l o w ' s v i e w of m a n in c o n t e m p o r a r y s o c i e t y — w e a l s o h o p e to h a v e s h o w n B e l l o w as a n o v e l i s t d e e p l y e n g a g e d in universal p r o b l e m s , w o r r i e d a b o u t the d e s t i n y of h u m a n i t y , a f a c t t h a t p l a c e s h i m a m o n g m a j o r c o n t e m p o r a r y w r i t e r s .

T h e two a s p e c t s t h a t m a k e up the c o r e of t h i s s t u d y , a n d h e l p s u p p o r t the c h o i c e of H e r z o g , the n o v e l w e will

3 e x a m i n e , are B e l l o w ' s w i d e - r e a c h i n g s o c i a l c o n c e r n , s h o w n in his n o v e l s , a n d his r e j e c t i o n of a p o c a l y p t i c , nihilistic views on m a n a n d s o c i e t y . His w o r k is f i l l e d w i t h a wealth of social o b s e r v a t i o n s . His n o v e l s g i v e us an a c c u r a t e r e p r e s e n t a t i o n of a s e t of s o c i a l r e l a t i o n s h i p s a t one p a r t i c u l a r m o m e n t in h i s t o r y — the c o n t e m p o r a r y w o r l d . T h i s f a c t is w h a t aroused o u r i n t e r e s t in d e t e c t i n g his v i e w of s o c i e t y through studying the s t r u c t u r e of one of his n o v e l s , n a m e l y H e r z o g .

We c o u l d e x t e n d to B e l l o w w h a t Z e r a f f a s a i d of J o y c e , M a n n a n d M a l t r a u x , w h e n s t a t i n g t h a t t h e y p r a c t i c e a k i n d of i m a g i n a t i v e s o c i o l o g y ; B e l l o w , t o o , is " a b l e to g r a s p by em p a t h y w h a t the s o c i o l o g i s t or h i s t o r i a n d e a l s w i t h in t e r m s of f a c t s or c o n c e p t s . "5 F o r Z e r a f f a , the f o r m a n d c o n t e n t of the n o v e l d e r i v e m o r e d i r e c t l y f r o m s o c i a l p h e n o m e n a t h a n do t h o s e of o t h e r a r t s ,6 a n d B e l l o w ' s n o v e l s are good evidence of t h i s a s s e r t i o n . T h e y s h o w his c o m m i t m e n t to m a n a n d his r o l e in s o c i e t y , a n d f r o m the first,they..have shown, w i t h o u t any d o u b t , a p o w e r of s o c i a l , p o l i t i c a l , a n d i d e o l o g i c a l c o n t e s t a t i o n . As o b s e r v e d by W i l l i a n D. M a r k o s , "Bellow's d e s i r e to h a v e his v i s i o n of l i f e u n d i s t o r t e d by 1 i terary fashion requires r e l i a n c e on the p o w e r s of o b s e r v a t i on a n d critical thinking."7

Bellow being a city writer, his main characters are searchers in the c i t y . It is t h e i n d i v i d u a l s e a r c h for self and reality t h a t d r i v e s t h e m . T h a t m a y be the r e a s o n f o r m o s t criticism on B e l l o w to be o r i e n t e d t o w a r d s the s e l f . But Bellow's creative v i s i o n of the c i t y ' s p o s s i b i l i t i e s is i m p r e g n a t e d with social a n d i d e o l o g i c a l c o m m e n t s . T h e r e is a l w a y s a direct relationship b e t w e e n the c h a o s of the c i t y a n d his p r o t a g o n i s t s 1 own f r a g

merited c o n d i t i o n , so t h a t his m a i n c h a r a c t e r s are s e a r c h e r s not o n l y f o r the r e a l i t y of s e l f b u t a l s o of s o c i e t y .

T h e city is the a r e n a in w h i c h B e l l o w ' s p r o t a g o n i s t s a c t , a n d t h r o u g h t h e i r a c t i n g a n d t h e i r r e f l e c t i o n s t h e y d i s p l a y the a u t h o r ' s own v i e w of s o c i a l r e a l i t y , s h o w i n g a s o c i e t y of i n c r e a s i n g c o n s u m e r i s m , w i t h its f a l s e c o n c e p t s of p r o g r e s s a n d p r o s p e r i t y . T h u s the s t r u g g l e b e t w e e n the p r o t a g o n i s t ' s h u m a n i s m a n d s o c i a l p a t t e r n s is a p o i n t in c o m m o m in al 1 his novel s.

In D a n g l i n g M a n , B e l l o w ' s f i r s t n o v e l , w e see t h r o u g h J o s e p h , the p r o t a g o n i s t , the a t t e m p t of the i n d i v i d u a l to e s t a b l i s h a r e l a t i o n s h i p w i t h the w o r l d w h e r e t h e i n d i v i dual can r e m a i n h i m s e l f w i t h o u t s u c c u m b i n g to s o c i e t y ' s v a l u e s . In T h e V i c t i m , as T o n y T a n n e r p o i n t s o u t , the p r o t a g o n i s t ' s

" d e e p e r f e a r c o m e s f r o m an u n c e r t a i n t y a b o u t his p o s i t i o n and stabi1 ity in the c r u e l , i n d i f f e r e n t c h a o s of the m o d e r n c i t y . "8 T h e a c k n o w l e d g e m e n t of t h e u r b a n m a s s e s is a g r e a t l e a p f o r w a r d in the p r o t a g o n i s t ' s c o m i n g to t e r m s w i t h the c i t y . T h e A d v e n t u r e s of A u g i e M a r c h s h o w s A u g i e f o r the f i r s t h a l f of the b o o k a c c e p t i n g t h e c i t y un criti c a l l y , b u t t h e r e is a s h i f t in the novel a n d by the e n d A u g i e ' s d i s i l l u s i o n m e n t w i t h C h i c a g o is c o m p l e t e . In S e i z e the D a y , Dr. A d l e r p e r s o n i f i e s s o c i a l p r e s s u r e s i n h e r e n t in the u r b a n s e t t i n g w h i l e W i l h e l m , the p r o t a g o n i s t , r e j e c t s the m a t e r i a l i s t i c w o r l d . L i k e A u g i e , W i 1 h e l m is s u r r o u n d e d by m a c h i a v e l l i a n u r b a n t y p e s w h o use h i m . In H e n d e r s o n the R a i n K i n g , w e see the p r o t a g o n i s t try ing to e s c a p e the p r e s s u r e s of society, and going to Africa, where he still "thinks in city

5 m e t a p h o r s a n d of c i t y e v e n t s ; the c i t y m a n t a i n its pressures, a n d a l i v e w i t h i n his o t h e r e s p e c u l a t i o n s is the c i t y i d e a of p e o p l e , n a m e l e s s , f a c e l e s s , w i t h w h o m no c o m m u n i c a t i o n is p o s s i b l e . "9 M r . S a m m l e r ' s P l a n e t s h o w s us a p r o t a g o n i s t w h o has p u t his f a i t h in r e a s o n , b u t w h o fin'ds h i m s e l f in an i n c r e a s i n g l y u n r e a s o n a b l e w o r l d , w h o s e e s i n t e l l e c t u a l m a n as an e x p l a i n i n g c r e a t u r e , b u t w h o can find..no e x p l a n a t i o n f o r the s o c i e t y he s e e s a b o u t h i m . T h e novel is full of social c o m m e n t s m a d e ' b y the i n t e l l e c t u a l S a m m l e r9a n d i m a g e s of the c i t y a r e u s e d , t h r o u g h o u t the novel to r e f l e c t his m o o d s of s a r c a s m , d e s p a i r a n d f e a r t o w a r d s s o c i a l p r e s s u r e s . H u m b o l d t ' s G i f t , B e l l o w ' s l a t e s t novel »exposes society itself, as a b a t t l e f i e l d f o r the p r o t a g o n i s t . T h e r e he i s , n o t o n l y in h i s t o r y b u t in his m i l i e u * w o r r i e d a b o u t the m e a n i n g of life a n d d e a t h . ^ It s h o w s an a c t u a l c o m m i t m e n t to contemporary 1 i fe,. t h r o u g h a m o r e d e f y i n g i n v o l v e m e n t of the p r o t a g o n i s t in the c i t y c o m m u n i t y .

B e s i d e s a p l a y a n d a n u m b e r of s h o r t s t o r i e s , B e l l o w has w r i t t e n e i g h t n o v e l s , the o n e s w e h a v e j u s t made comments o n , a n d the one w e h a v e s e l e c t e d f o r the purpose of this study:

H e r z o g . S i n c e all Bel 1 ow ' s -novel s m i r r o r c o n t e m p o r a r y social r e a l i t y , w e t h i n k it r e l e v a n t to g i v e a reason for our choosing H e r z o g . W i t h t h i s novel B e l l o w b e g i n s to d e v e l o p a n e w s t y l e in his p r o s e , a n d a d i f f e r e n t c h a r a c t e r a p p e a r e d f o r his p r o t a g o n i s t . His s t y l e b e c a m e c l o s e to t h a t of the e s s a y i s t a n d s o c i a l l y c o n s c i o u s t h i n k e r , a n d his p r o t a g o n i s t b e c a m e m o r e r a t i o n a l , c o n s c i o u s a n d c r i t i c a l . H e r z o g is p a r t of the i n t e l l e c t u a l - a c a d e m i c w o r l d ; t h u s the v a l u e p l a c e d on

a w a r e n e s s , w h i c h m a y be c o n s i d e r e d the m a i n o b j e c t i v e of B e l l o w ' s p r o t a g o n i s t , is m o r e e v i d e n t in this novel . H e r z o g is m o r e c o n s c i o u s a n d s e l f - c r i t i c a l t h a n his p r e d e c e s s o r s . H e a l s o c o n f r o n t s a l m o s t e v e r y i s s u e r a i s e d in Bel 1 ow's previous f i c t i o n . B e l l o w ' s o w n w o r d s g i v e us evidence of his development.

He s a i d :

In w r i t i n g H e r z o g , I f e l t I w a s c o m p l e t i n g a c e r t a i n d e v e l o p m e n t , c o m i n g , to t h e end of a l i t e r a r y s e n s i b i l i t y . T h i s s e n s i b i l i t y implies a c e r t a i n a t t i t u d e t o w a r d s civilization— a n o m a l y , e s t r a n g e m e n t , the o u t s i d e r , the c o l l a p s e of h u m a n i s m . W h a t I'm a g a i n s t is a n o v e l of p u r e l y l i t e r a r y d e r i v a t i o n — a c c e p t i n g t h e c a n n o n of J o y c e and K a f k a . W i t h D ö s t o y e v s k y , at l e a s t , h i s e y e s a r e t u r n e d f r e s h l y to the h u m a n s c e n e .1 0

In H e r z o g we t e s t i f y , . t h r o u g h the l e t t e r s and internal m o n o l o g u e s , n o t o n l y a bri11 i a n t cri ti q u e on the v a l u e s a n d p r o b l e m s of o u r s o c i e t y b u t a l s o , as w e h a v e s a i d , a r e j e c t i o n of the n i h i l i s t i c p h i l o s o p h i e s , in f a v o r of a p o s i t i v e

a t t i t u d e t o w a r d s m o d e r n c i v i l i z a t i o n . H e r z o g ' s understanding of the " s o c i a l m e a n i n g of n o t h i n g n e s s "1 1 is v e r y significant.

F o r h i m , m a n ' s a w a r e n e s s of n o t h i n g n e s s , far f r o m b e i n g a c a u s e for d e s p a i r and d e n i a l of all v a l u e , s h o u l d g i v e h i m a . h e i g h t e n e d r e a l i z a t i o n of the v a l u e of s o c i a l relationships.

As W i l l i a m D. M a r k o s s a y s , " B e l l o w c a l l e d f o r w r i t e r s to see l i f e d i r e c t l y r a t h e r t h a n a c c e p t v i e w s of l i f e p e r p e t u a t e d by the t r a d i t i o n of a p e s s i m i s t i c 1 i t e r a t u r e . "-12

O u r p u r p o s e in g r a s p i n g the a u t h o r ' s v i e w of s o c i e t y t h r o u g h t h e c r i t i c a l a n a l y s i s of his novel is m a i n l y b a s e d on the s t u d i e s of L u c i e n G o l d m a n n , w h o states that the author's w o r l d v i e w , w h i c h " n o t o n l y c o n s t i t u t e s an a s s e r t i o n of a t r u t h b u t is a p r e c i s e r e f l e c t i o n , a q u e s t i o n i n g of the entire

T h e f o r m e r are the c o n s c i o u s a n d d e l i b e r a t e f u n c t i o n s of s o c i a l p r o c e s s , t h e l a t t e r , the u n c o n s c i o u s a n d uni n t e n d e d . o n e s . Thus, for instance, Christian missions in parts of Africa "manifestly" try to c o n v e r t A f r i c a n s to C h r i s t i a n i t y , " l a t e n t l y " h e l p to d e s t r o y the

M a x W e b e r , in his m e t h o d o l o g i c a l e m p h a s i s u p o n u n d e r s t a n d i n g the i n d i v i d u a l as the u l t i m a t e u n i t of e x p l a n a t i o n , a t t a c k s the f u n c t i o n a l i s t a p p r o a c h as well as the M a r x ist use of o b j e c t i v e m e a n i n g s of social a c t i o n r e g a r d l e s s of the a w a r e n e s s of t h e a c t o r . M a r x a s c r i b e s m e a n i n g s to the process of social i n t e r a c t i o n s a n d W e b e r r e j e c t s the a s s u m p t i o n of any o b j e c t i v e m e a n i n g . T h e w a y the s o c i o l o g y of k n o w l e d g e f i t s i n t o o u r c o m m e n t s is by s h o w i n g us t h a t ideas as well as m e n are s o c i a l l y l o c a t e d . Thi s sociological t r e n d r e j e c t s the c l a i m t h a t t h o u g h t o c c u r s in i s o l a t i o n f r o m the social c o n t e x t w i t h i n w h i c h p a r t i c u l a r m e n t h i n k a b o u t par t i c u l a r t h i n g s .
