The editors’s note

The editing of scientific journals in the field of Information Science has come a long way in Brazil and most journals in this field are open access. The publishing of the results of scientific activities, particularly in Information Science, are broadly open, favoring the process of knowledge construction. Access to systematic knowledge is imperative for scientific research.

This process, however, is not without problems. A phenomenon that has attracted the attention of both scientific editors and funding agencies is research ethics. Indeed, good scientific practice has been widely discussed. Fraud in this field occurs in many ways: appropriation of parts of previously published papers without proper citation of sources, fabrication of the results of experiments, presentation of hasty conclusions, assigning authorship to collective works although contribution was not significant, among others.

The scientific editor is responsible for taking care of the quality of journals. This means adopting rigorous mechanisms to evaluate the manuscripts submitted for publication. However, this responsibility is not a solitary activity. On the contrary, it requires the contribution of manuscript reviewers.

The increase in the number of manuscripts submitted to journals makes evaluation a laborious process. To that extent, relying on the contribution of experts is fundamental. Only those who have in depth knowledge of the scientific field are able to identify certain types of fraud, such as plagiarism, use of work without the identification of the sources and the lack of scientific rigor, that is, ensuring that what is to be published deserves to become public.

However, the greatest role belongs to the authors of the manuscript. They should conduct their research ethically and publish their work in compliance with good scientific practices, being one of them the ‘publish or perish’ principle. The proliferation of articles without scientific quality is one of the main problems that affect the growth and consolidation of the fields of knowledge.

It is worth stating that public resources fund different types of scholarships and research grants in Brazil. These resources must be managed properly and researchers should use them conscientiously. Respecting public funds is undoubtedly an ethical act that should be present in the scientific activity and when publishing.

The journal Transinformação is part of the international movement for research ethics, and consequently, the respect for the best practices in production and publication of scientific articles. Within this perspective, the journal counts on the support of authors and reviewers who have contributed to the Journal, ensuring its longevity, prestige and success.
