BIOACTIVITY OF THE RED ALGAE Asparagopsis taxiformis COLLECTED FROM THE SOUTHWESTERN COAST OF INDIA

Based on the recent samples from the shrimp ponds located in Kollam (Munroe Island), southwest coast of India, one of the blooming cyanobacterial sp. was now identified as Oscillatoria sp. instead of Trichodesmium sp. reported in Anticyanobacterial Assay (MANILAL et al. Bioactivity of the red algae Asparagopsis taxiformis collected from the Southwestern coast of India). Therefore, we revisited the taxonomic status of the cyanobacterial samples used in the anticyanobacterial assay. Initially upon culturing the specimens, the trichomes were found cylindrical in shape without sheath and seen in bundles which characteristically resembled Trichodesmium sp. However, detailed microscopical examination revealed that the trichomes were not bound within a common mucilage instead they were grouped by attraction and were rotating along their longitudinal axis, which is a notable characteristic feature of Oscillatoria sp. Considering these features and further examination, we can conclude now that the cynobacterial sample used in the assay was Oscillatoria sp.
