HarvardUniversityhasrecentlypublishedastudyreporting thefollow-upofthelivesof724peopleinthecityofBoston, fromuniversitystudentstoordinarypeople,during76years oftheirlives.OneoftheauthorsisWaldinger–thisreference mayhelpthosewhoareinterestedinlocatingthisstudy.
Thelivesofthesepeoplewereextremelyvaried,andthe groupevenfeaturedaUnitedStatespresident.Somehad seri-ouslegalproblems,othersbecameverywealthy,andmostlead acommonlife.
The intent of the study was to assess what the most importantelementinthelivesofthesepeoplewas, andthe conclusionwasthatrelationshipswerethemostimportant thing in the lives of most of the people studied. Wealth, poverty, andstatusorlackthereofwasnotasimportantas relationshipsandfriendships.
Wehaverecentlyreturnedfromthe48thBrazilianCongress of Orthopedics and Traumatology (Congresso Brasileiro de OrtopediaeTraumatologia[CBOT]),afterthreedaysof social-izinginwhichIwasabletoproperlyappreciatethevalueof thisHarvardstudy.Infact,the4000participantswenttothe congressbasicallyinsearchofprofessionalrelationships,as learningcanbeachievedthroughothersources,unlike con-viviality.
Iheardsometheoristsandprophetsoftheapocalypse say-ingthattheageofcongresseswillend,thatweshouldhostthe CBOTeverytwoyears,thatthemanufacturerswillhosttheir ownconferences,andsomanyotheridiociesthatIcouldnot register.Wehadabeautifulcongress.
Forreasons thatdonotbeardiscussinginthiseditorial, theorganizationhostedthecongressinasinglespace, divided onlybythesoundprovidedbyheadphones. Thus, ahugearea wasdivided into sixsegments from the center;in each of them, theheadphoneswouldonlytransmitthesoundofthat segment.
Aquestionable system, whichraisedoneconstant criti-cism:
WhenIhavetheheadphoneson,Icannottalktotheperson nexttome,anditishardtoaskquestions.Thatis,Icannot createrelations.
JustastheHarvardstudydemonstrated,relationshipsare thebackboneofourassociations,anditwillbethroughthem thatwewillhavemorestrengthtocontinuetohostCBOTsand becomestronger.Manufacturersarewelladvisedandknow howtoreachus.Areductionintheinterestofsurgicalsupplies distributorswasindeedobserved,buttherewasasignificant increaseintheinterestofpharmaceuticalindustries,insearch ofourprescriptionstrength.
Ibelievethat theregrettableepisodesthatoccurred due toanincorrectreadingbythedistributorsofsurgical mate-rial,togetherwiththepoorremunerationofthephysicians, are still themaincause ofthis reduction, disguisedin the word “compliance.” This episode will surely be overcome, as it is inconceivable that an industry with so many new things to demonstrate and be used by us would not par-ticipateinacongress with4000–5000users ofits products, concentrated inasingleenvironmentwiththeintentionof learning.
SBOTisagreatpromoterofrelationships, andshould con-tinuetodoso;otherwise,itwillloseitsstrength.Oureventual sponsors willonce again understand that the best wayto relatetousistooccupythespacesdestinedfortheminour continuingmedicaleducationprograms, thecongresses.
