RBO

presente
Thisyear,theRBOwillbe50yearsold!
ThehistoryoftheRBObeganin1965.Afteradifficultstart ledbyMarcioIbrain,itwaskeptgoingforalongtimethrough thededicationofourdearlymissedfriend,Donato,whowas followedbyGiesta.Thishistoryhasalreadybeennarratedin thisspace.
WestartedouractivityintheRBOin2009,nominatedby theadministrationofRomeuKrause.Inthefirsteditorialof ouradministration,Krausecalledonustohavethepioneering spiritofMarcio,thededicationofDonatoandtheseriousness ofGiesta,inourdutiesastheneweditoroftheRBO.
Onthatoccasion,wehadeightstudiestoorganizeforthe firstissue.However,ourpublishinghouse,whichdepended onMr.Katayama,thetraditionalpublisherofRBO,wasclosing downitsactivities.
Wehad ameetinginRiodeJaneiro(whichatthattime waswherethe journalwasbased) withGiesta,who kindly familiarizeduswiththeproblemsthatwewouldhavetodeal with.
WithunrestrictedsupportfromtheKrauseadministration, wecontractedapublishinghouse,AthaComunicac¸ãoe Edi-toraLtda,andwedesignedtheformatoftheRBO,nowtobe basedattheofficeoftheBrazilianSocietyofOrthopedicsand Traumatology(SBOT).
Weenvisagedabimonthlyjournal,withreview,updating andoriginalarticles,casereportsandtechnicalnotes.We con-tactedourindexingdatabase(SciELO)anddeterminedwhat theminimumsizefortheRBOshouldbe.
TheRBOwouldhavesixissuesperyear,withaminimumof 60originalarticles,anditwouldbenecessarytodefinean edi-torialbodythatwouldberenewedannually,withmembers representing theentire country.Thestudies would require analysisbyatleasttwoeditors,inadditiontotheassessment madebythe editor-in-chief,a practicethatwas already in placeduringtheGiestaadministration.
Initially,therewasalackofstudiesandwehaddifficulty in editing the first issues, which we frequently com-pletedthrough commissioningupdating textsfrom several
colleagues.Inourfirstyear,ourrejectionrateamongthe stud-iessubmittedwas17%.
We traveled to some other states around this country andspokeatseveralcongressestopublicizetheRBOandto seek to demonstratehow scientificstudies were compiled. Wecould see that largenumbers ofpossible authorswere unawareofthetechniquesneeded.Weweresurprisedatthe level ofinterest:we foundthat wewere speaking to audi-encesofmorethan100peopleabouthowtowritescientific studies.Inoureditorials, wehaveinsisted ontheneedfor publishedpapersandsometimeswehavedisseminatedrules forcomposingscientifictexts,inordertoguidenewauthors andalsotheeditorswhoassessthestudiesthatare submit-ted.
The number ofstudies submitted hasincreased signifi-cantly,followedbyanimprovementinquality.Theincrease inthenumberofarticleshasbeensomuchthatweneeded tochangepublishinghouse:wehavemovedtooneof inter-nationalstature,Elsevier,whichhasprovideduswithanew editingsystem,alongwitheditorialsupport.
The web-based analysis system has turned evaluations onsubmittedstudiesintoamoredynamicprocessandhas enabled interaction between editors and authors that has greatlyhelpedtoimprovethequalityoftheRBO.
Wehavenowanalyzedmorethan1,248studiesandweare maintainingarejectionrateof35%,whichiscomparableto thatofgoodinternationaljournals.Infact,thereisawaiting list of more than one year forpublication, which is being resolved throughpublication on theweb, inScienceDirect (http://www.sciencedirect.com/Science/journal/aip/01023616), forallstudiesthathavebeenapprovedbytheeditorialboard, independent ofthe date.In this manner, authors can cite studiesandbecitedintheirstudieswithouttheneedtobe reportedintheprintedjournal.

Thisisourbirthday present,whichistheresultof long-term work. In this, we have had significant collaboration throughtheeffortsofourlibrarian,Ms.Diva.
Wehavehad supportfrom allsixpresidentsoftheRBO withwhomwehaveworked:Santili,Osvandré,Faloppa, Ger-aldo,Arnaldoand,ofcourse,Romeu,thefatherofthisprocess. AllofthesepresidentshavetreatedtheRBOwithenormous respectandhavededicatedmaximumattentiontoeverything thatwehaverequestedforimprovingtheeditorialqualityof ourjournal.
Attheendofthesesixyears,wewouldliketothankthe editorialboardandourassociateeditors,withspecialthanks totheareaeditorsandinvitededitorswho,inananonymous manner,haveanalyzedtextsandhelpedauthorstoimprove theirtextsandconsequentlytheRBO.
Webeginthisnewperiod,whichshouldlastanotherthree years,thistimenominatedbyPercope,withthesame enthu-siasmwithwhichwebeganourfunctionofeditor-in-chiefsix yearsago,andanentreatytotheeditorswhoprecededmeto onceagainprovideinspiration,withthepioneeringspiritof Marcio,thededicationofDonatoandtheseriousnessofGiesta.
