Gorceix, logo após a criação da Escola de Minas, afirmava: A criação de uma revista periódica que se ocupe com o estado da indústria das minas no Brasil é complemento natural necessário da organização da Escola de Minas de Ouro Preto.

Escreve ainda: A experiência mostra, infelizmente, todos os dias, que não é conveniente, mormente no começo, contarem as revistas científicas demasiado com os recursos provenientes de assinaturas. Dispondo somente desse meio, ser-me-ia impossível contrair compromissos, que por força maior talvez fosse o brigado a não satisfazer.

Assim foi criado os “Anaes da Escola de Minas”, que durou pouco, mas deixou sementes. E elas brotaram dando vida a REM - Revista Escola de Minas, que, em janeiro, completou 77 anos.

Mas o fundador da Escola advertia: Reconheço todos os inconvenientes de se-melhante incerteza de publicação; entretanto, por mais restrita que seja ela, julgo-a muito preferível ao silêncio completo.

Como Gorceix, há 26 anos à frente da REM, ainda vivo lutando, diariamente, para eliminar as incertezas que ainda pairam sobre ela. E, mais uma vez, é ele que vem em meu socorro quando escreve: (...) porém, apesar disso, a missão estaria acima de minhas forças sem o auxílio dos que se interessam pelo progresso da ciência e pela prosperidade de país.

Longa vida à REM.

Upon establishing the School of Mines in Ouro Preto, Henrique Gorceix stated: the creation of a periodical magazine that divulges the state-of-art of the mining industry in Brazil is a natural and necessary extension of this organization: Escola de Minas de Ouro Preto.

He further wrote: Unfortunately, experience demonstrates, every each day, that it is not convenient, and extremely slow in the beginning, to maintain a scientific magazine with only funding from subscriptions. Having only this resource available, I find it impossible to assume responsibilities, which for reasons beyond my control, I cannot fulfill.

Due to this situation, the publication Annuals of the School of Mines was created. It, however, did not last very long, but planted seeds for the future. These seeds generated the “Revista Escola de Minas – REM, which in January of this year completed 77 years of circulation.

But the founder of the School adverted: I recognize the similar uncertainty of all publication inconveniences; however, for as restricted as the publication may be, I judge it to be preferable to complete silence.

As with Gorceix, I have been responsible for the publication of REM, still circulating, and have been fighting daily to eliminate the uncertainties that always exist. It is because of REM that I write: However, in spite of these uncertainties, the mission inspired by Gorceix is beyond my forces without the help of those who are interested in the progress of science and the prosperity of the country.

Long live REM.
