7.2 Pedagogical Innovation

7.2.1 New Course units at IST

The following courses have been created at IST:

• 1994 Computational Fluid Mechanics, Aeroespace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

• 1994 Aerodynamics II, Aeroespace Engineering. • 2013 Biofluids Mechanics, Biomedical Engineering.

• 1994 Advanced Topics of Computational Fluid Mechanics, PhD in Mechanical Engineering.

(10)

• 2008 Biomechanics of Circulation, PhD Computacional Engineering.

The course contents are documented in Fenix and have been supported by own research through the years.

7.2.2 Strengthening of computational resources to support teaching

The strengthening of computational resources and facilities have been conducted allowing students to participate in the lift off of new computational pardigms:

• From 1990-1992, one of the first parallel computers in Portugal was installed in my research group with a PARSYTEC T800 computer with 16 transputers allowing the first developments of parallel processing, domain decomposition, with own developed software for the solution of Navier-Stokes equations.

• From 1992-1995 one of the first implementations of 32 Pc´s clusters in Portugal. The bilt of computers was not a task of mechanical engineers but the computers were assembled in house from computer components.

• From 2002 to 2004 the intensive parallelization and the advent of low cost multicore create the opportunity to develop paralell computation in which the parallelization is made in space and time.

• From 2008 to 2010 one of the first for numerical simulations Portugal using own assembled and controlled GPU´s Graphical Prossesing

As soon as the new computational paradigms developed, new hardware appeared in the market and unfortunately we had no financial power to acquire them and continue our development. Nevertheless we have been in the beginnings and a lot of students have benefit from it, some of them integrated the IST computer Center CIIST or have moved to industry performing software development.
