T h e f i r s t v i l l a g e i n v e s t i g a t e d w a s P i r a - n e m a , f o l l o w e d b y t h e v i l l a g e s o f C a p i v a r i a n d A m a p a ( s e e m a p ) . P i r a n e m a c o n s i s t a o f a b o u t 119 h o u s e s w h i c h a r e s c a t t e r e d w i d e l y o v e r a n a r e a o f a b o u t 25 s q u a r e m i l e s . T h e p o p u l a t i o n n u m b e r s a b o u t 800 p e r s o n s a n d t h e m a i n o c c u p a t i o n i s f a r m - i n g o n a s m a l l s c a l e M o s t o f t h e v il- l a g e r s a r e i m m i g r a n t s f r o m o t h e r p a r t s o f B r a z i l , a n d m a n y c o m e f r o m a r e a s k n o w n a s e n d e m i c f o r C h a g a s ’ d i s e a s e . T h e l o c a l i t y i s a b o u t 3 0 k m d i s t a n c e f r o m t h e c ity o f R i o d e J a n e i r o , a n d w a s v i s i t e d u s u a l l y t w i c e a w e e k . D u r i n g t h e r a i n s t h e v is its w e r e i n f r e q u e n t a s t h e r o a d s a n d b u s h t r a c k s w e r e i m p a s s a b l e f o r m o t o r v e h ic le s . P r i o r t o t h e s u r v e y a m o u n t e d s p e c i m e n o f a t r i a t o m i n e b u g w a s p r e p a r e d t o s i m u l a t e t h e a p p e a r a n c e o f t h e i n s e c t i n l i f e . T h e b u g w a s s h o w n t o m e m b e r s o f e a c h h o u s e - h o l d v i s i t e d a n d q u e s t i o n s w e r e a s k e d to f i n d o u t h o w m a n y r e c o g n i z e d t h e b u g .
