In this work we present the textual analysis of a questionnaire that is part of the research project: “Analysis of the understanding of stochastic concepts by Mathematics students and consequences for educational practices in EGB and Polimodal”.
In the first stage of this research we carried out an a-priori textual analysis of each of the items included in the questionnaire to determine its Institutional Meaning. We based our work on the Elements of Meaning taken from the Theory of Semiotics Functions (Godino, 2003).
In the second phase, we try to identify which elements of their Personal Meaning the students really used and compare them with the Institutional Meaning, which will allow us to identify the errors of interpretation in reading simple graphs and tables. These results will serve to elaborate didactical activities to be implemented in the classrooms that will serve to promote the understanding of these concepts and other basic stochastic elements.
The selection of the elements of meaning used in this research was made by taking into account several Statistics Education investigations (Batanero, 2001; Tauber, 2001; Cobo, 2003).
