ince t he dissem inat ion of pr elim inar y r esult s of t he t r iennial ev aluat ion of Gr aduat e ( GP) cour ses inBr azil, per for m ed by t he Coor dinat ion for t he I m pr ov em ent of Higher Educat ion Per sonnel ( CAPES) , m uch has
been discussed on t he t hem e am ong academ ics. The evaluat ion syst em values aspect s relat ed t o t he qualit y of
program s focused on t he educat ion of hum an r esour ces and t he gener at ion of know ledge pr oduced, w hich ar e
scor ed accor ding t o t he follow ing r equir em ent s: qualit y of t he pr ogr am pr oposal, facult y m em ber s, st udent s,
t heses and disser t at ions, int ellect ual pr oduct ion and social inser t ion.
Considering t hat t he lat t er aim s t o ident ify how t hese m ast er’s and doct oral graduat es, as well as t heir
research and advisors, act in t erm s of decisive challenges for societ y, and t hat each knowledge area is aut onom ous
t o define and underst and social insert ion wit hin it s part icularit ies, in t his edit orial, we t ried t o present elem ent s
t o suppor t r eflect ion on t he GP’s social inser t ion in Br azilian Nur sing.
Since t he cr eat ion of t he fir st m ast er ’s ( 1972) and doct or al ( 1981) pr ogr am s, t he m ission of Nur sing
graduat e program s in Brazil has been t o cont ribut e t o t he educat ion of crit ical, et hical and considerat e m ast er’s
and doct oral graduat es, capable of building new k now ledge t o t he benefit of societ y.
Th e n u m ber of m ast er ’s an d doct or al pr ogr am s in n u r sin g, accr edit ed by CAPES, h as in cr eased in
recent last years by 69% , from 16 program s in t he t riennium 1998- 2000 t o 27 in 2004- 2006. A t ot al of 2,102
m ast er’s and 653 doct oral graduat es in Nursing, from different Brazilian st at es, Lat in Am erican and Port
uguese-speaking Afr ican count r ies, graduat ed in t he per iod bet w een 2001 and 2006. Cur r ent ly, t her e ar e 32 graduat e
pr ogr am s, appr ox im at ely 700 under gr aduat e cour ses in Nur sing and 200, 000 gr aduat ed nur ses.
The academ ia plays a cent ral role in t he generat ion of knowledge and graduat e program s are responsible
for t he lar ger par t of scient ific pr oduct ion in Br azilian nur sing. This pr oduct ion has gained incr eased v isibilit y
worldwide, t hough st ill far from t he m ore t radit ional areas such as Medicine, bot h in num ber of art icles and in
t he per cent age of cit at ion and j our nal im pact num ber. How ev er, it is per ceiv ed t hat , like in ot her k now ledge
ar eas, t her e is difficult y in applying t he know ledge pr oduced in pr act ice and in t he pr oduct ion of pr oduct s.
I t is u n der st ood t h at , t o ex pan d GP, it is n ecessar y t o discu ss t h eir fu t u r e, n ot on ly r egar din g t h e
in cr ease in pu blicat ion s in in t er n at ion al j ou r n als of im pact , bu t also in t er m s of t h e social in ser t ion of it s
academ ic pr oduct ion and it s cont r ibut ion t o t he count r y ’s social and econom ic dev elopm ent . Thus, publicat ion
of r esear ch r esu lt s in h igh - qu alit y n at ion al per iodicals an d in t h e popu lar m edia is also n ecessar y, so t h at
societ y per ceiv es r esear ch r esult s w it h consequent r eflect ion on people’s liv es.
I t is known that the contributions of scientific research to the society are m ediated by broad political, cultural
and social processes( 1). However, som e elem ents can be considered indicators of what these contributions are.
I n t he exact sciences, for inst ance, t hese indicat ors can be t he generat ion of t echnical result s, such as
pr ocesses, pat en t s con ced ed, an d in n ov at iv e sof t w ar e. I n t h e h ealt h ar ea, t h e r esu lt s ar e f ocu sed on t h e
q u alit y of car e d eliv er ed t o u ser s, p r od u ct iv it y an d ser v ice ef f icien cy, d im in ish ed m or b id it y an d m or t alit y
indicat or s and incr eased longev it y, am ong ot her s.

Visibilit y or t ransparence t he program gives t o it s act ivit ies: by t he m aint enance of a webpage for t he dissem inat ion
of int er nal dat a, st udent select ion cr it er ia, facult y and st udent pr oduct ion, funding r eceiv ed, access t o t heses
an d disser t at ion s.
I t should be highlight ed t hat ext ension act ivit ies are valued by t he GP as t heir result s enable changes
in t he social area. I t is not j ust about im plem ent ing ready knowledge t o realit ies t hat need it . I t is also im port ant
for t hese st udies t o pr ov ide feedback t o r esear ch and educat ion( 1).
I n v iew of t he abov e, it is consider ed t hat social inser t ion and ev aluat ion of t he GP’s socioeconom ic
im pact and scient ific research product s should be widely discussed by Nursing graduat e program s. A syst em at ic
r ef lect ion on t h e im pact of r esear ch can pr odu ce n ew cr it er ia f or t h e ev alu at ion an d def in it ion of r elev an t
st r at egies f or u se by r esear ch er s, besides st im u lat in g a dialogu e of scien t ist s an d gr adu at e pr ogr am s w it h
k now ledge user s and societ y.
