Appendix – Qualitative Analysis Topic Guide for the Focus Groups
Our topic guide, with relative sub-topics, was scheduled as following:
• Socio-Demographics characteristics: Age range, Nationality, Gender, Professional experience length, Education and Occupation of the person in household with annual income, Master program, University.
• Activities before/after the Masters: Sectors and Duration of the Professional experience, Gap Year, Travel, Others and the importance attributed to those experiences, Most important takeaways from masters (skills, learning, other)
• Background – Childhood: Main activities and childhood description (Sports, Others activities, Languages, Family habits), Importance and Influence of those activities (Influence on performance/achievements, Parents approval/support, Travels before
university, Other International experiences and the importance attributed to those, Education (Influence of education and lifestyle on ambitions and goals), Readings, University
Admission.
• Bachelors: Interaction and presence at University (Active/inactive/proactive, Relationships with mentors and professors, Career services, Clubs and Associations, Job market
interaction and research).
• Success: Meaning, Word cloud, Achievability depends on endogenous/exogenous factors, Duration, Indicators, Prestigious Job meaning.
• Happiness: Measures (Scales and Physical sensations related), Relationship with expectations and success.
• Projective Technique: Exposure (Activities, Languages, Cultural Experiences, Sports). “ If you met a parent of a 5 years old child at this time, what suggestions would you give him/her in terms of the child’s education, so that the child would be as successful or more successful than you?”
