The Puericulture Institute was designed in three distinct blocks. On the Block “A” were i nstalled the offices and clinics of pediatrics and child care - both with exam rooms, classrooms, among others. The Block “B” was assigned to the hospital and included a three-storey building. On the first floor were located the administrative offices of the institute (administration, warehouse, cafeteria of enlisted personnel, kitchen and dietary), the amphitheater and museum of children health and disease. The second floor was designed to wards the center of premature children, the cafeteria and a playground. The third floor was for the library, the principal's office, the meeting room of doctors and a winter garden. Finally, in Block C were installed the pupilheira, day care, shelter and nursery school childcare attendants.

4. Evaluation
Give the scientific reasons for selection for docomomo documentation
Intrinsic value
4. 1 technical evaluation: The building located in the Cidade Universidade island was built according to a complex program that established the division into four sectors - outpatient, hospital, bank and shelter maternal milk - which gave materiality to the precepts advocated by Dr. Martagão Gesteira. According to the physician, for the proper development of teaching practical and efficient childcare was important to have a heathy "human material", that is, newborns and their mothers / infants. Thus, an essential condition for the education and training of specialists in child care outside the womb was the construction of a "maternal shelter" along with a "pupilheira" (“ponponnière”) - where the babies were allocated.
4. 2 social evaluation: The Puericulture Institute cornerstone was laid during a offical cerimony at the 16th of october in 1937, with the presence of the President Getúlio Vargas, in a site near the Faculty of Medicine, located at Praia Vermelha, with a former project designed by Oscar Niemeyer, but never used. However, in the next day of the cerimony the ministry of Education and Health, Mr. Gustavo Capanema, suspended the beginning of the works, motivated by decision of transfering the institute to newly created Brazil University.
4. 3 cultural and aesthetic evaluation:
The architecture design represents the purest expression of carioca modernism. It was conceived to take advantage of the sloping terrain and develops itself into interconnected low blocks, which the number of floors, height and width requirements follows the need of the building function. The rationality is evident in the construction of orthogonal arrangement of the blocks and the ratio of openings and materials used - such as bricks and hollow square or small windows and large glass panels - creating areas of shade and protection and better use of the sun.
The blocks are interconnected and provide courtyards for socializing the patients and staff, and allows good ventilation and light to all rooms. The orthogonality of the block is broken by the organic landscaping designed by Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1994) and by the coverage in domes placed at one end of the central block. The architectural project received the first place in the category of hospital buildings in the International Exhibition of Architecture of the Second International Biennial of Sao Paulo (1953-1954).
Comparative significance
4. 4 canonical status (local, national, international)
The Puericulture National Institute, a pediatric hospital of the Universidade do Brasil, was the first building finished for the campus of Cidade Universitária.
4. 5 historic and reference values:
The project of the institute was developed under the general plan of the campus, conducted between 1949 and 1962 by the design staff of the Tecnical Bureau of Brazil University (EBTU). The general plan followed the model of rational planning. From initial design, only five buildings were constructed, including the Puericulture National Institute.
