6 Conclusão
Com este estudo conclui-se que a infeção pelo protozoário Toxoplasma gondii ocorre nos asininos de Portugal, sendo a prevalência de anticorpos para este parasita nesta espécie de 6,9%. Com este valor de seroprevalência, e embora não estejam reportados casos clínicos de toxoplasmose em asininos, conclui-se que este parasita merece destaque na lista de diagnósticos diferenciais em patologias de natureza reprodutiva, neurológica ou de outra natureza mas mais estudos são necessários uma vez que a infeção por T. gondii parece influenciar a qualidade do leite de burras (Martini et al., 2014).
Os asininos são herbívoros com uma dieta variada e os seus hábitos alimentares variam com as diferentes condições oferecidas. O estudo aprofundado da seroprevalência de infeção or T. gondii em asinios pode providenciar conhecimentos sobre os diferentes fatores de risco relacionados com pasto pelo que de futuro será de interesse estudar não só a seroprevalência mas também as condições de pastoreio dos animais.
Os resultados obtidos reforçam a tendência constante das fêmeas para uma maior prevalência podendo existir uma base fisiológica para esta diferença.
Relacionando os resultados serológicos com a idade, este estudo permitiu corroborar que a transmissão congénita não é frequente em asininos.
No convívio com outras espécies, os resultados obtidos neste estudo permitiram corroborar os achados de outros estudos e não identificaram o convívio com outros animais como estando associado è infeção por T. gondii. Exceptuando o convívio com cães, ou a presença de cães nas explorações, que foi identificado como um fator de proteção, possivelmente devido à presença destes animais reduzirem o tempo que os gatos vadios passam nas explorações.
Com este estudo também foi possível verificar que os asininos em Portugal são utilizados como animais de estimação mas também como animais de trabalho sendo utilizados em diferentes atividades com grande potencial.
A nível epidemiológico, o risco que os asininos representam para a saúde pública como meio de transmissão deste agente zoonótico é considerado baixo. No entanto, embora o consumo de carne de burro em Portugal não seja uma prática corrente ocorre em algumas zonas, tendo sido descrito por algumas pessoas ao longo do estágio curricular e das recolhas. A exportação de carne de burro para países como a China ou o consumo de carne de burro dentro do próprio país podem tornar-se uma realidade, sendo por isso importante ter noção que o risco associado ao consumo de carne de asininos não é nulo. A infeção por este parasita existe nesta espécie a nível mundial e Portugal não é exceção.
98 A utilização dos animais para a produção de leite pode ser um fator importante na preservação da espécie nos países desenvolvidos e na recuperação de algumas raças. Atualmente em Portugal a produção de leite de burra destina-se apenas à cosmética não sendo conhecidos casos de produção de leite para consumo humano. A presença de ADN do parasita em leite de burras e a capacidade de infeção do leite de outras espécies levantam a possibilidade de o consumo de leite de burra poder apresentar risco para a saúde pública. Apesar de no decorrer dos inquéritos não terem sido encontrados proprietários que consumissem leite de burra, o consumo de leite cru ocorre em Portugal mas não de forma generalizada e não de forma consistente. Contudo esta via de infeção não deve ser descartada, pois a utilização do leite de burra como suplemento dietético e leite de substituição para crianças com alergias a leite de vaca tem vindo a ganhar mais popularidade. Importa salientar ainda que o leite de burra, ou de qualquer outra espécie animal, quando destinado ao consumo humano, deve ser sempre sujeito a tratamento térmico devendo o consumo de leite cru ser desencorajado. O tratamento de liofilização que este produto sofre na industria cosmética inclui as condições necessárias para inativar os taquizoítos pelo que não apresenta riscos para a saúde pública.
Até ao momento de redação desta dissertação, este é considerado o primeiro estudo sobre a prevalência de anticorpos para Toxoplasma gondii em asininos de Portugal. Contudo, mais estudos são necessários nesta espécie de modo a compreender melhor a relação que o parasita tem com esta espécie hospedeira.
