OnMarch16,1967,ProfessorWalterGhezzi,teacherandaborn leader,founderofthedisciplinesofProctologyoftheMedicine SchooloftheUniversidadeFederaldoRioGrandedoSul,of Fundac¸ãoFaculdadeCatólicadeMedicinadoRioGrandedo Sul,andofPontifíciaUniversidadeCatólicadoRioGrandedo Sul,andformerChairmanoftheRioGrandedoSulMedical Association (AMRIGS), LatinAmerican Association of Colo-proctology,andBrazilianSocietyofColoproctology,brought togetheragroupofcolleagues,mostofwhomwerehisformer pupils,inaroomattheSantaCasadeMisericórdiadePorto Alegre,tolaythefoundationsoftheDepartmentofProctology atAMRIGS.
TheparticipantsofthismeetingwereDr.WalterGhezzi, Secretary,Dr.JorgeMarioBarbeux, andother members:Dr. EricErnestoP.Fillmann,Dr.NiloLuizCerato,Dr.ValérioCelso Garcia,Dr.Francisco Dalinha, andDr. VirgílioNoll. Follow-ing the foundingofthe Department and its acceptanceby AMRIGS, which requiredaminimum of7participants, the Departmentbeganitsfunctioninginitiallywithweekly,and, aftersometime,monthly,meetings.Themattersdealtwith wereadministrativeandscientificones,beingdulyrecorded intheminutes.
Afterafew yearsasChairman,ProfessorWalterGhezzi, who establishedthe consistency necessary forthe Depart-ment totake office, other Chairpersonswere elected, with annualsuccessionstothepresentday.
Duringhismanagementterm,Dr.HenriqueGhezzi sug-gested that the Department became independent, and its namewaschangedinaccordancewiththeoriginaldescription oftheminuteregisteredintheFirstSpecialRegistryOfficeof DeedsandDocumentsfromLegalEntitiesofPortoAlegre,the textofwhichfollows:“Onthetwenty-firstdayofthemonth ofMayof1991,the3rd.monthlymeetingoftheDepartment ofColoproctologyatAMRIGS wasan ExtraordinaryGeneral Meeting.Afteran exhaustivediscussion ofthe subject, we opted forthe creationof the“SOCIETY OF
COLOPROCTOL-OGYOFRIOGRANDEDOSUL”.TheSocietywascreatedasa transformationoftheDepartmentofProctologyoftheMedical AssociationofRioGrandedoSul.
Afterthat,theStatutesforthenewSocietywereread, dis-cussedandapproved.Itwasdecidedthatatthenextmeeting, thatis,thesecondmeetingoftheSOCIETYOF COLOPROCTOL-OGYOFRIOGRANDEDOSUL,theapprovalofthedraftStatute wouldoccur.Thisdraftwouldbeprintedanddistributedtoall membersandthenvotedonatafuturemeeting.
InthisAssembly,19fullmemberswerepresent,whowere consideredasfoundersoftheSocietyofColoproctologyofRio GrandedoSul.Thesefoundersarelistedbelow:

Subsequently,duringthemanagementtermofother col-leagues,andaccordingtotheguidanceoftheBrazilianSociety, thenameoftheEntitywaschangedtoColoproctology Soci-etyofRioGrandedoSuland,subsequently,totheGaucho Association of Coloproctology (AGCP), which is its current denomination.
Listed below are all Chairpersons of the Gaucho Soci-ety of Coloproctology, from the oldest to the most recent ones, and not necessarily in this order: Adriano Staubus, AfonsoMallman,HeloisaMüsnich,AfonsoMallman,Daniel Azambuja, Daniel Damin, Érico Ernesto P. Fillmann, Flavio Diniz,FrancescaPerondi,GilmaraPandolfo,JoãoFranciscoX. Müsnich,JorgeMario Barbieux,José Barbieux,José Vinicius Cruz,IgnacioMallman,KarenMallman,MarliseCerato,Nilo LuizCerato,PedroGuz,CarlosBrenner,RobertoAmaral,Ruy Takashwi,RosangeladeOliveiraMello,ValérioCelsoGarcia, VitorBinda,andHenriqueFillmann.
Thescientificsubjectsdiscusseddealtwithanorectaland colonicpathologies,beingpresentedbycoloproctologists.
InadditiontotheparticipationofPortoAlegrecolleagues, themeetingswereprogressivelyenrichedbycolleaguesfrom theinteriorofthestateofRioGrandedoSul,whotraveled exclusivelytoparticipate.Torepaythiseffort,some Associa-tionmeetingswereheldininlandcities.
Meetings were held in Pelotas under the chairmanship of Salvador Ferreira; in Passo Fundo under the chair-manship of Carlos Madalosso; in Santa Maria under the chairmanshipofFernandoCorrea;inCanelaunderthe chair-manship of José Luiz Barbieux (POA); in Caxias do Sul under the chairmanship of Nilo Luiz Cerato (POA), with the assistance of Farjala Catan and Tito Armando Rossi; and in Livramento under the chairmanship of Doralício Lopes.
ThemeetingofCaxiasdoSulwasheldin3days:August 23–25,1974,withthreeparticularemphases:
Firstly,theinstitutionand deliveryoftheWalter Ghezzi awardforthebest scientificwork,atthesuggestion ofour colleagueIgnacioMallman.TheawardwasgiventoDr. Cle-berSantos,fromBajé,withhisstudyonpolypsandintestinal polyposis.
Secondly,aColonoscopypresentationbyourcolleague Gio-vanniBenvenutti,whospentayearabroadforspecialization inthisarea.
Thirdly,theinstitutionofthefirstGauchoDayof Coloproc-tology,whichnowadaysfulfillsitsmissionandisalreadyinits 34thEdition.
Fromthatpointon,anewphaseoftheGauchoAssociation ofColoproctologyemerges.Itsmainfeaturewasthecampaign topreventcolorectalcancer,withsupportfromtheBrazilian SocietyofColoproctology(SBCP)andtheBrazilianAssociation forthePreventionofBowelCancer(ABRAPRECI).Duringtwo consecutiveyears(2014and2015),agiantmodelofan intes-tinewaspresented,whichwasseenbythousandsofpeoplein thecityofPortoAlegre,underthechairmanshipofDr.Marlise MelloCerato.InSãoPaulo,thiscampaignwasinstitutedby oneofour nationaland internationalreferences, Professor AngelitaHabrGama,founderofABRAPRECI.Wewouldlike
topayatributetothisprofessional,whoisacknowledgedas oneofthegreatestreferencesinthetreatmentofrectal can-cer,and that, togetherwithDr. DaherCutait,are themost distinguishedBraziliancolleaguesinourspecialty.
Thegiantmodelofthelargeintestinedemonstratingthe mostfrequentpathologieswasexposedintwolargemallsin PortoAlegre;in2016thecampaign–leanerbutmoreeffective –continued.
Duetothistrulyimportantwork,Dr.MarliseCerato, repre-sentingtheAGCP,receivedacommemorativeplaquefromthe CityHallofPortoAlegreandinstitutedtheweekofprevention ofcolorectalcancer,whichbecameanofficialeventthanksto theapprovalofCouncilmanIdenirCecchin’sbill.Dr.Marlise Cerato,stillrepresentingAGCP,wasawardedwiththeofficial medalinthe53rdLegislativeperiodintheLegislative Assem-blyofPortoAlegre,grantedbyDeputyPedroWestphalenand alsoacceptedbythePresidentandotherStateDeputies,asa tributetopeoplewhocarryoutworkofgreatrelevanceinthe StateofRioGrandedoSul.
InthemanagementtermofDr.Marlise,itwasalsodefined thatthefirstmeetingofthecurrentyearwillbeascientific event,withadinnerforthereceptionofnewresidentsin Colo-proctologyandtheirpresentationtotheothermembersofthe GauchoAssociationofColoproctology(AGCP).Itisimportant torememberthat,inRioGrandedoSul,wehavefiveofficial servicesofresidenceinColoproctology,whichare linkedto MECandSBCP:theServicesofPUC,HospitalNossaSenhora daConceic¸ão,SantaCasadeMisericórdiadePortoAlegre, Hos-pitaldeClínicasdePortoAlegre(HCPA),andHospitalErnesto Dornelles(HED),allbasedinPortoAlegre.Theseserviceshave alreadyformedalargenumberofresidents.
Throughoutalltheseyears,numerouscongresses,special days,forums,meetingsandothereventshavebeenheld,with thehonorablepresenceofmanySBCPcolleaguesand profes-sionalsfromabroad.Amongthese,wewerehonoredtoreceive Dr.MichaelKeighley,Dr.AngeliaGama,Dr.FabioCampos,Dr. MariaCristina Sartor,Dr.MiguelPedroso, Dr.MauroPinho, Dr.ArmandoMelani,Dr.RaulCutait,Dr.RenatoLupinatti,Dr. RenatoPinho,Dr.RenatoBonardi,Dr.RodrigoPerez,Dr.Sergio Araújo,andmanyothercolleagues,allofthemwithexcellent scientificstandardsandwhosparenopainstohonorus.
Next,wepraiseformerChairpersonsoftheGaucho Asso-ciation of Coloproctology who also were Presidents of the BrazilianSocietyofColoproctology:ProfessorWalterGhezzi, SalvadorFerreira,CarlosBrenner,PedroGuz,ÉricoFillmann, AfonsoMallman,andKarenMallman(2008).HenriqueSarubi FillmannwillbeournextChairman(2018).Ingeneralterms, thiswasthetrajectoryoftheGauchoAssociationof Coloproc-tologythat,alongitsexistence,sadlysufferedthelossofdear colleagues.Withgreatlonging,wewishtopayaposthumous tributetothesegreatprofessionals:
