I n s e v e n t y - o n e p a t i e n t s w ith c u t a n e o u s d i s e a s e p e r s o n a l l y f o llo w e d b y o n e o f u s ( E A L C ) p a r a s i t e s w e r e f o u n d in 3 1 . 8 % ( 2 2 / 6 9 ) o f G i e m s a s t a i n e d s m e a r s , 4 8 % ( 3 3 / 6 8 ) o f h is t o l o g i c a l s e c t i o n s , 3 3 % ( 1 1 / 3 3 ) o f c u l t u r e s a n d 6 7 . 9 % ( 3 6 / 5 3 ) o f i n o c u l a t e d h a m s t e r s . T h e l a t t e r m e t h o d w a s s ig n i f ic a n t ly m o r e s e n s i t i v e ( p < 0 . 0 1 ) . H o w e v e r , e x a m i n i n g t h e o v e r a ll d a t a p r e s e n t e d in T a b l e 3 , t h i s p r o c e d u r e ( h a m s t e r in o c u l a t i o n ) d o e s n o t d if f e r s u b s t a n t i a l l y f r o m s m e a r .

S in c e p a t i e n t s h a d o f te n c o n s u l t e d s e v e r a l d o c t o r s p r e v i o u s l y t h e to t a l a m o u n t s o f g l u c a n t i m e u s e d b e f o r e w e s a w th e p a t i e n t s w e r e la r g e b e i n g o n a v e r a g e 7 5 ± 6 8 g r a m s o f d r u g fo r s in g le le s io n s a n d 4 5 6 ± 3 2 8 g r a m s f o r m u lt ip le le s io n s . I n s p it e o f s u c h a d o s e i t is o f n o t e t h a t p a r a s i t e s p e r s i s t e d i n t h e l a t t e r g r o u p . O n e d e f e c t o f o u r d a t a o n p a r a s i t e i s o l a t i o n is t h a t a l i f o u r p r o c e d u r e s n a m e ly s m e a r , h is t o lo g y , c u l t u r e a n d h a m s t e r in o c u l a t i o n w e r e n o t a v a i l a b l e in a li p a t i e n t s . C u l t u r e w a s th e l e a s t u s e d d u e to th e l a c k o f s u i t a b l e m e d iu m a n d c o n t a m i n a t i o n p r o b le m s .
F o r t y - n i n e s t o c k s f r o m t h e 1 8 2 p a t i e n t s w ith c u t a n e o u s l e s i o n s a n d 11 s t o c k s f r o m th e 5 7 p a t i e n t s w ith m u c o s a l d i s e a s e w e r e i d e n tif ie d b y is o e n z y m e a n d / o r m o n o c l o n a l a n t i b o d i e s te c h n i q u e s a s L b b 4 . F r o m t w o o t h e r p a t i e n t s n o t c o n s i d e r e d h e r e p a r a s i t e s o f the, L e i s h m a n i a m e x i c a n a c o m p le x w e r e r e c o v e r e d .
A l i th e p a t i e n t s d e s c r i b e d h e r e h a d a h is t o lo g ic a l p i c t u r e s u g g e s tiv e o f le is h m a n i a s i s .
