I n t h e 2 0 t h cen t u r y, t h e r ev olu t ion in in f or m at ion an d com m u n icat ion t ech n ologies ( I CT) pr ov oked
large- scale changes in science, due t o t he speed of scient ific com m unicat ion processes, t he conquest of qualit y
st andar ds in t hese pr ocesses and t he pot ent ial t o r each client s/ consum er s of t he pr oduced k now ledge.
I n t he t rail of t his revolut ion, SciELO – Scient ific Elect ronic Library Online was creat ed in 1997, t hrough
a pioneer ing init iat iv e in Lat in Am er ica and t he Car ibbean. I t s goal is t o j oin and m ak e av ailable a select ed
elect r onic libr ar y of scient ific j our nals, t hus at t ending t o t he needs of t he scient ific com m unit y in dev eloping
count ries. This ent erprise is acknowledged as relevant and wide- ranging due t o it s policy and equit y st rat egies,
offer ing open access t o scient ific infor m at ion; due t o t he v isibilit y it gr ant s t o scient ific pr oduct ion fr om Lat in
Am er ica and t he Car ibbean; due t o t he qualit y and eligibilit y cr it er ia it adopt s and t o it s m et hodology, w hich
favors, am ong ot her resources, t he availabilit y of cont ent s in t hree languages: Port uguese, English and Spanish.
The Lat in Am erican Journal of Nursing ( RLAE) was subm it t ed t o an assessm ent process and included in
SciELO from 2002 onwards ( www.scielo.com .br/ rlae) . I n 2006, it s ent ire collect ion ( since 1993, when RLAE was
cr eat ed) becam e av ailable on- line, and t he j our nal now appear s as one of t he m ost accessed publicat ions.
Ack now ledging t echnological change as an im por t ant t r igger of oppor t unit ies w hich, in t ur n, leads t o
polit ical, st ruct ural, organizat ional and process changes, RLAE used it s five- year experience in SciELO ( t hrough
per for m ance and qualit y goals)

Paulo at Ribeirão Pret o College of Nursing had t he t ask of developing a dissem inat ion m echanism for research
r esult s of int er nat ional r ange, in line w it h t he com m it m ent it assum ed befor e t he WHO t o cont r ibut e t o t he
dev elopm en t of n u r sin g r esear ch . Th er ef or e, at t h e t im e of it s cr eat ion , RLAE alr eady saw t h e n eed t o be
issued in t wo or t hree languages. Due t o logist ical lim it at ions, t he j ournal st art ed wit h publicat ions in Port uguese
or Spanish, considering t he im port ance of publishing for t he Brazilian and Lat in Am erican com m unit y. However,
t h is did n ot m ean t h at t h e im por t an ce of pr odu cin g a global dissem in at ion v eh icle w as ign or ed, per m it t in g
nur ses fr om ot her r egions t o get t o k now t he st at e- of- t he- ar t of Nur sing r esear ch in Br azil and t he r egion.
Alt hough k now ing t hat our scient ific act iv it y w as “ inv isible” in global t er m s w as uncom for t able, launching an
init ially regional publicat ion alr eady m eant an advancem ent . The j ournal favored t he achievem ent of im port ant
goals as, according t o com m ent s at t hat t im e, “ t he fact is t hat , in an increasingly int erdependent world, count ries
hav e t o int errelat e m ut ually. I n t he cont ext of int erdependence, Nursing in Lat in Am erican count ries should be
guided by a sense of collabor at ion, w hich is consider ed as an invest m ent . I t is know n t hat cur r ent t endencies
m ov e t ow ar ds globalizat ion , m ain ly in com m u n icat ion . Th is spir it m ar k s t h e cr eat ion of t h e Lat in Am er ican

This innov at ion, br ought about by t echnological changes, benefit s client s w ho hav e access t o RLAE’s
collect ion w herever t hey are. Besides offering access t o Spanish and Port uguese- speaking people, t hese effort s
concr et ize t he t ar get of gr ant ing int er nat ional v isibilit y t o k now ledge pr oduced in Br azil and t he r egion.
