COORDINATION OF INTERNATIONAL TECHNICAL _TINGS

Item oro_osed by the Government of Chile

It is highly gratifying to observe that not only the Organization

but a series of other agencies of the United Nations, of the

Organiza-tion of American States, as well as governmental and private bodies have

recently been sponsoring conferences ,seminars, and other types of technical

meetings in the Continent, all of which have been aimed at studying

matters of great topicality and importance. However, at the same time

it is noted that very often the topics are the same, although the approach

to them may be from a different angle. This may lead to a reduction in

the return from these meetings; among other reasons because of the

diffi-culty the countries have in sending suitable participants to all of them°

Furthermore, there is frequent repetition of similar recommendations

which, if they were to come from more diversified groups representing a

number of sectors, would carry more weight both at the national and

inter-national level.

The Government of Chile therefore believes it advisable to submit

the following

RESOLUTION:

To congratulate the Organization on its desire to sponsor

technical meetings in the Hemisphere as well as on the way in

which it has made its thinking known at those sponsored by other

international, national,or private agencies or organizations ;

To request the Director of the Bureau that steps be taken

in such a way as he deems appropriate, to strengthen the machinery

for coordinating United Nations agencies and other organizations

which sponsor technical meetings in the Continent so as to plan

them in a coordinated way and thus facilitate attendance at them,
