Introductory note

This work is a compilation of photos of the sagittae otoliths of some of the shallow and deep water fish species captured in the demersal cruise surveys in the Azores, performed by the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries (DOP) of the University of the Azores.

A total of 53 species belonging to 29 families and 11 orders, are included in this work, which intends to be a 1st Edition of a catalogue to be complemented in the future with other species. The intention of the catalogue is to help the identification of fish species when only the observation of the otoliths is possible. This situation frequently happens in the analysis of stomach contents for the studies of the feeding habits of marine organisms. The catalogue, can also be used to assess any taxonomical misidentification, namely with very similar species or when the species were identified by several observers with different taxonomic skills. This catalogue can also be useful in the planning phase of a study using otoliths, to evaluate a priori the size range of the otoliths of a species which we are not familiarized with. Finally, the observation of the general shape of the otoliths of the same species but from fish with different sizes can have implications in the evaluation of the expected accuracy of some techniques frequently used in fish growth studies (e.g. retrocalculation). Some species show pronounced ontogenic changes in the general shape of the otoliths, and in others, the intricate and irregular nature of the otoliths make them difficult to be analysed and used in growth studies for example.

Material and methods

All the otoliths presented in this catalogue where caught in the Azores archipelago in several bottom longline cruise surveys between 1995 and 2003. In general fishes caught were sorted by species, identified (usually to the species level), counted, weighted, and measured. For each station, a group of species was selected for more detailed biological sampling. These data have been used in the studies of reproduction, growth, genetics, and feeding habits (for details see Menezes 2003). Fish species where identified on board following, Whitehead et al. (1984-1986). Most of the otoliths were taken for growth studies or for the otoliths collection and stored in paper envelopes. This stored material was used in the present otoliths catalogue. Whenever possible, we took photos of four otoliths with different sizes for each species. In general the otoliths of the smallest two and the biggest two fishes that can be found in the surveys database, were used. This was done to give an idea of the size range of the otoliths of each species, and to show the changes in the shape of the otoliths with the fish growth. When the otoliths were smaller than 10 mm, photos were taken with a Leica DC 300 fixed to a binocular microscope, and the images were processed with the Leica IM version 4.0. software. When the otoliths were bigger than that, the photos were taken with a digital camera (Kodak CX6230) trough the same binocular. Only two otoliths were too big to be visualized in the binocular microscope, and were photographed only with the digital camera.

All of the otoliths were measured manually under the binocular microscope. The measuring for otoliths smaller than 10 mm was done with the use of the measuring tool of the Leica software package, for the others a ruler was used. The specimens Total length (LT) or Fork Length (LF), and the Otolith length (LO) is indicated for each case.

Arquivos do DOP INSTRUÇÕES AOS AUTORES

Apesar de os documentos a publicar nos Arquivos do DOP poderem ter uma forma livre, aconselha-se, por uma questão de uniformização, a adopção das seguintes normas:

I - Estrutura do documento

Os Arquivos do DOP estão divididos em cinco séries: Relatórios Internos (de divulgação restrita), Estudos, Estatísticas, Cruzeiros e Documentação.

Tanto quanto possível cada documento deverá ter a seguinte estrutura:

1 - Capas rígida de cor amarela para Relatórios Internos, branca para Estudos, cinza para Estatísticas, verde para Cruzeiros e azul para Documentação. Na capa frontal deverá ser indicada a série, a numeração e o título. Este último é totalmente livre podendo também conter uma figura. O verso da capa frontal deve ter informação geral, podendo conter informação adicional, relativa por exemplo à origem da ilustração da capa, arranjo gráfico ou impressão.

2 - Primeira página, sem numeração, com título, nome do autor ou autores e morada (instituição, direcção, país e cidade)

3 - Índice, para documentos com mais de 10 páginas

4 - Página com resumos, em Português e Inglês

Folha A4 com as seguintes margens: direita e esquerda com 2.5cm, topo, com número, 3.5cm e inferior com 3.0cm. Os documentos com mais de 10 páginas devem ser, de preferência, impressos em frente e verso.

2 - Numerações

Páginas - A numeração da página deverá ser em arábico, centrada no topo da página e iniciar-se na primeira página com texto (introdução).

Figuras e Tabelas - Numeradas também em arábico e de preferência inseridas no texto.

3 - Estilo e Fontes

De preferência deverá ser usada a fonte Times New Roman 12, com texto a uma coluna. O espaçamento deverá ser de 1.5. A fonte e o espaçamento poderão ser reduzidos para textos muito grandes.
