New Proofs
Many theorems have several different proofs. For example,
Hahn-Banach theorem also has two proofs: Analysis and geom-etry.
Hence, It is worthwhile to think about new proofs of existing results with at least one of following characteristics:
Simplicity
Different vision (geometry, algebra, analysis or other motivations )
More for teaching
Example A: convergence of Filter method:
Paper of Fletcher etc.
Paper of Clovis Gonzaga and Elizabeth Karas
Example B: finite termination of the conjugate gradient method:
Modifications
Analyze possibility of modification for conditions of published results; Try to set weaker conditions or more feasible conditions.
J.Y. Yuan, Study of Comparison theorem of splitting matrices:
A = M1 − N1 = M2 − N2, Mi−1 existem
xk+1 = M1−1N1xk + M1−1b
If A−1Mi ≥ 0 e A−1M1 ≤ A−1M2, then
If (M2−1A)i+l ≤ (M1−1A)i(M2−1A)l
then
Theorem
If A and M∗A−∗A + N satisfy the condition
x∗Ax 6= 0 x
∗(M∗A−∗A + N)x
x∗Ax > 0
Lemma
AA∗ − H∗A∗AH = (I − H)∗(M∗A + A∗N)(I − H).
Theorem
ρ(H) < 1 if and only
Proof
x∗A∗Ax − x∗H∗A∗AHx = [(I − H)x]∗(M∗A + A∗N)[(I − H)x] or
(1 − |λ|2)x∗A∗Ax = |1 − λ|2x∗(M∗A + A∗N)x.
(1 − |λ|2) = |1 − λ|2x
∗(M∗A + A∗N)x
With new (always weaker or/and simpler), the published results should be modified.

Let A = M − N. For solving linear system Ax = b. There are
xk+1 = M−1N xk + M−1b
xk → x∗ ⇔ ρ(M−1N) < 1
Theorem
If A and M∗A−∗A + N satisfy the condition
x∗Ax 6= 0 x
∗(M∗A−∗A + N)x
x∗Ax > 0
Contrary, if ρ(H) < 1, then for all x ∈ E, there are
x∗Ax 6= 0 x
∗(M∗A−∗A + N)x
x∗Ax > 0
or
x∗Ax = x
∗(M∗A−∗A + N)x
Proof
Let λ and x be Hx = λx e x ∈ E. Remind λ 6= 1 (if not, M x = N x
implies that A is singular).
Since
or
(1 − |λ|2)x∗Ax = |1 − λ|2x∗(M∗A−∗A + N)x.
By the condition,
(1 − |λ|2) = |1 − λ|2x∗(M∗A−∗A + N)x/x∗Ax > 0.
Consider singular A. The key problems: x∗Ax can be zero; There does not exist A−1. Now we cannot consider classic convergence concept because λ = 1 is eigenvalue of H explicitly.
To get the result, by the proof, the first step is to modify (*).
A − H∗AH = (I − H)∗(M∗(A+)∗A + N)(I − H), (∗∗)
Theorem
Let A = M − N and H = M−1N with R(A) = R(A∗) and M :
R(A) → R(A). If A and M∗A+∗A + N 6= 0 satisfy the condition
x∗Ax 6= 0 x
∗(M∗A+∗A + N)x
x∗Ax > 0
semi-Contrary, if H is semi-convergent, then for all x ∈ E TR(A), there is
x∗Ax 6= 0 x
∗(M∗A+∗A + N)x
x∗Ax > 0
or
x∗Ax = x
∗(M∗A+∗A + N)x
Let A = M − N and H = M−1N with M : R(A∗) → R(A). Then,
• If M∗A + A∗N is positive on E TR(A∗), then, H is semi-convergent;
• If H is semi-convergent, then, M∗A + A∗N is positive on T

Rolle’s Theorem
Let f ∈ C[a, b] and derivative in (a, b). If f(a) = f(b), then there exists at least one c ∈ (a, b) such that f′(c) = 0.
Mean value Theorem
Let f ∈ C[a, b] and derivative in (a, b). Then there exists at least c ∈ (a, b) such that
f′(c) = f(b) − f(a)
Observation
We can understand
f′(c) = f(b) − f(a)
b − a

Lagrangian Theorem
Let f, g ∈ C[a, b] and derivative in (a, b). If g′(x) 6= 0 ∀x ∈ (a, b), and g(b) 6= g(a), then there exists at least c ∈ (a, b) such that
f′(c)
g′(c) =
f(b) − f(a)
Help from Other Areas
Sometimes the point of view, the technique, the idea or the methods from other areas can hep us to solve our problem.
discuss with researchers from different areas,
Bieberbach’s conjecture - Branges’ Theorem

At the same night, Gautschi received call from Askey who said that the result is the special case of his result with Gasper pub-lished in 1976. (Amer. J. Math., 98(1976) 709-737).

Integration and Cooperation
• Between Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics
• Among Mathematics and Physics, Chemistry etc.
Example: Computational Fluid Mechanics. Cuminato and his Ph.D. student use Crank-Nicolson method with explicit cooper-ation of boundary conditions. The numerical simulcooper-ation gives some conjecture that the method is stable with some parameter
