Itisagreathonorformetobeherethisevening, inthiscityonthefrontier of Brazil. Let me begin by congratulating the SOBER on the location of the meeting.IunderstandthatthisisthefirstmeetingoftheSOBERintheCentral West,exceptforacoupleofearliermeetingsheldinBrasilia,thenation’scapi-tol.Mycommendationsonanexcellentchoice.TheCentralWestisoneofthe dynamicregionsofBrazil, andcharacterizedbyadynamicagriculturethatis helpingtodriveBrazil’seconomicgrowthandexpansion.
Iwasaskedtodeliveranexpressionofappreciationonbehalfofallthree ofusonthisauspiciousoccasion.Inthebeginning, thisrequestpuzzledme quiteabit.IkeptwonderingwhyI,aforeigner, wastheoneaskedtorespond for everybody. Then it suddenly occurred to me! Had they asked Eliseu to speak, heisaMineiro, andhewouldhavebeensaying“Uai,”“Uai,”“Uai”all thetime.Paulo,forhispart,isaCarioca.Hewouldhavebeen“Chiando”all thetime.TheyaskedmeastheonlyonewhohadapurePortugueseandwho couldspeakonbehalfofallthreewithoutdistortion!
ItjustcouldbethatfromtimetotimeagrammaticalerrorinPortuguese willcreepintomyremarks, especiallyintermsofchangingthesexofsome words–thathobgoblinofallnativeEnglish-speakersinspeakingPortuguese. Despite these caveats, I ask your forbearance with my Portuguese. The truth of the matter is that your President probably reasoned that with me speakinginPortugueseyouwouldallhavetopayattentionmoreclosely!
Inamoreseriousvein,Iamverygratefulforthehonorofbeingaskedto speakonbehalfofallthreeofus.IhaveknownEliseuandPauloalmostfrom myfirstarrivalhereinBrazil,some41yearsago,andhavebeencollaborating almostcontinuouslywiththemduringthisperiod.Evenso,theywerevery graciousinallowingmetospeakontheirbehalf.
MyassociationwithSOBERgoesbackalmosttotheoriginsofthatorgani-zation.However,Ishouldemphasizetheword“almost.”TheoriginsofSOBER datetoaperiodpriortomyarrivalinBrazil.
Myfirstthoughtinacceptingtheinvitationtospeakforthethreeofuswas thatIwouldtalkaboutthehistoryoftheSOBERandhowithasevolvedover time.ButthenyourPresidentimposedseveretimelimitsonme–tenminutes! WhilethisdiscussionbetweenyourPresidentandIwastakingplace,Eli-seusentmeacopyoftheminutesofoneoftheearlymeetingsatwhichthe creationofSOBERwasdiscussed.Ithinkitappropriateonthisoccasionthat we recognize some of the people who contributed so much to creating the organizationinthebeginning.Indoingso, wewouldsurelyberemissifwe didn’trecognizethenamesofRuyMillerPaiva,EdsonPotschdeMagalhães, VictorJoséPellegrini, andRubensDiasAraújo.Thereweremanyothers, but agreatdealoftheenergyandinspirationforthecreationoftheSOBERcame fromthesefourmen.

Another unique feature of the SOBER from its beginning has been the extenttowhichithastriedtoincludethesociologistsinitsprogramandmem-bership.(NotethatSociologyisinthenameoftheorganization.)Duringthe time the military were in power that inclusion provided good cover for our sometimes-controversialcolleagues.Wemaylaughatthatnow,butatthetime itwasaseriousissue.Moregenerally,allthreeofushopetheSOBERwillcon-tinuetoreachouttotheruralsociologistsandinvolvethemintheworkofthe Society.Theyhavethepotentialtogreatlyenrichwhatwedo.
SomeofyouknowthatourPresident,AntônioSalazarBrandão,collabo- ratedwithmeindoingasurveyoftheliteratureonthedevelopmentofagri- cultureinLatinAmerica.ThiswasdoneattherequestoftheAmericanAg-riculturalEconomicsAssociation(AAEA).Oneofthethingsthatimpressed usinthatsurveywastherichnessanddiversityintheperspectivestakenin thatliterature.
Thepost-WorldWarIIperiodhaswitnessedtheintroductionofneoclas-sicaleconomicsintothestudyofagriculturaldevelopment.Theneoclassical perspective, althoughverypowerfulinitsanalyticalpotential, canalsobe rather narrow. The Latin American literature, and especially the Brazilian literature,hasavoidedthatnarrowness.Importantly,someofthebesteco-nomicinsightshavecomefromhistorians,fromsociologists,frompolitical scientists, andsoon.Consequently, wehavegainedtheanalyticalpowerof neoclassicaleconomics, togetherwiththemuchricherperspectivestheother disciplinesbring.Ispeakforallthreeofusbeinghonoredtonightinmak-ingapleathatwecontinuetoinvolvesociologyandtheothersocialscience disciplinesinwhatwedo.

ustodowhatwehavedone.Letmeelaborateabitonthefactorsthatseemed tometobeimportant.
First, we each had a good set of genes, which we inherited from our parents.Thetruthofthematteristhatwehadlittletodoinselectingthose genes.Theyweregiventous!Buttheyhavehadagreatinfluenceinmaking uswhoweare.
Second,wehavebeenabletoworkinanenvironmentofsocial,economic, andpoliticalinstitutionsthathaveenabledustoworkproductively.Indeed, theyhaveevengivenustheincentivestobemoreproductive.
Unfortunately,itisalltooeasytoneglecttheimportanceoftheseinstitu-tionalarrangementsthatgovernhowweinteractwitheachother.Thethreeof ushavebeenfortunatetoliveincountriesinwhichtheprevailinginstitutional arrangementsserveduswell,eventhoughattimestheyhavebeenfarfrom perfectinbothcountries.
Theprocessofglobaleconomicintegrationisputtinggreatstressonour institutions,andwilllikelyputevengreaterstressontheminthefuture.How-ever,wecaneachbethankfulforwhatwehavehad,andcontinuetohave.
Third,wehavehadprofessionalcolleagueswhohavecritiquedourwork andthushelpedustomakeitbetter.Noneofusworkaloneinthisworld. ThegreatstrengthofanorganizationsuchastheSOBERisthatitprovidesthe mechanismsbywhichwecaninteractwitheachother,challengeeachother, andhelpustobebetteranalysts.
Finally,eachofushashadspouseswhoatimportantpointsinourca-reers have contributed importantly to them. Unfortunately, these spouses seldomreceivetherecognitiontheydeserve.Onbehalfofeachofus,Iwant tothankourrespectivespousesforthecontributionstheyhavemadetoour respectivecareers.

religionattheUniversitygavetheSundaylectureintheRockefellerChapel.I attendedregularly.OneofthemostremarkableandinsightfullecturesIheard borethetitle“PrincipalitiesandPowers.”
That lecture was about George Wallace, the then Governor of Alabama, andasignificantracistofthetime.ThespeakerpointedoutthatWallacewas forthemostpartnotactingvolitionally.Instead, hewasaproductofhaving beenbornandraisedinaracistsociety, andofstillbeingundertheinfluence ofpowerfuleconomicandsocialstructures.Thepoint, ofcourse, wastotake theseconsiderationsintoaccountinjudgingtheactionsofthemanandhis actions.
Ifoundthattobeaverypowerfullesson.Mypointthisevening,however, isthatthesameprincipleappliesinapositivesense.Therearepowersand principalitiesthatinfluenceourdailylives.Theyincludelivingattherighttime fortheinstrumentswithwhichwewerebornandwhichwehaveacquired overtime,beinginvitedtoplayimportantrolesatcriticaltimes,havingcol-leagueswhocomplementourowntalentsandskills,andsoon.Recognizing theimportanceofthesepowersandprincipalitiesisatrulyhumblingexperi-ence.Thatiswhywearesogratefulfortherecognitionwearereceivingthis evening.
Toconclude,Iwanttomakeonefinalpointonourbehalf.Weliveina criticaltimeinourhistory.Technologyhascreatedconditionsinwhichasmall numberofpeoplecandestroytheworld,asweknowit.Atthesametime, economicintegration–facilitatedbyanothersetoftechnologies–issogreat andsopervasivethatwehaveessentiallybecomeeachother’sneighbors.Yet weliveinaworldofisolation–eachofus–sovastthatwehardlyunderstand thevaluesandmotivationsofthepeopleandcountrieswithwhichweinteract witheachday.
The technology with which we live makes it very dangerous for us to continuetoliveinthisway.InconcludingtheseremarksIwanttochallenge eachofustodoourmosttocooperateacrossculturalandnationalboundaries, andtomakeagreaterefforttounderstandeachother.Weneedtomakemuch greatereffortstounderstandotherpeoples, andtounderstandothercountries. Thedifferencesamongcountriesarerootedforthemostpartinethnicdiffer-ences, and understanding those is not easy. Yet doing so is fundamental to buildingapeacefulworld.
