PROCEEDINGS OF THE 9th BRAZILIAN WORKSHOP

ON SEMICONDUCTOR PHYSICS

This special volume of the Brazilian Journal of Physics contains the proceedings of the 9th Brazilian Workshop on Semiconductor Physics (BWSP-9), held in Belo Horizonte from February 7th to 12th, 1999. The conference was attended by approximately 150 scientists who presented around the same number of papers, which were selected from more than 170 submitted abstracts. The papers published in this volume were revised and refereed according to the usual standards of the Brazilian Journal of Physics. The BWSP-9 followed the tradition of the previous biannual series of meetings that started in 1983 with the 1st Brazilian School on Semiconductor Physics. The name was changed to \workshop" instead of "school" in the 1995 meeting, in accordance with a change in the format, from a mix of a summer school and a regular conference towards a scientic meeting aimed at active researchers in the area. Nevertheless, the conference is still very attractive to young researchers and newcomers to semiconductor physics, with quite a few of the invited talks being given at a tutorial level or being a revision of selected topics from the frontiers of research in semiconductors. The BWSP-9 was no exception. There were 20 invited talks presented by leading scientists from all over the world and the contributed papers were presented in poster sessions. The program covered almost all aspects of semiconductor physics of relevance at the present moment: quantum dots, quantum wires, two dimensional systems and heterostructures, surfaces and interfaces, defects and impurities, amorphous semiconductors, wide band gap and other new materials, technological applications, devices and growth of semiconductors.

The members of the National, Program, and Local committees, and the sponsors of the 9th Brazilian Workshop on Semiconductor Physics, are listed in the following pages. We are most grateful to them for helping to make this conference a success. We thank also all participants and organizations that contributed to this success.
