OnMarch1,Prof.Dr.EduardoÁlvaroVieirapassedaway. In1971,hewasthefirstorthopedicsandtraumatology resi-dentoftheSorocabaMedicalSchoolofthePontificalCatholic UniversityofSãoPaulo(PUC-SP),ofwhichhebecamea pro-fessor in the same year. He was a pupil of Professor Luiz GustavoWertheimer,becameinterestedinkneesurgeryand conductedextensiveanatomicalstudieson thisjoint,from whichhedefendedhismaster’sdissertation “Anatomofunc-tionalbasisofthekneejoint”andhisdoctoralthesis“Distal insertionsofthe semimembranosus muscle”,bothofthem in1980.Hewasoneofthepioneersofthearthroscopic tech-niqueinBrazilandwasalsooneofthefoundermembersof theBrazilianSocietyofKneeSurgery,in1983.In1985,hewas atraineeintheHughstonClinicwithDr.JackHughstonand

In2001,hesatacompetitiveexaminationforthetitleof titularprofessorandwasapprovedbytheboardofexaminers, whichincludedthelateProf.Dr.JoséLaredoFilhoandProf.Dr. ÉdieBeneditoCaetano.

Hecontributedtowardsthehumanandorthopedictraining ofmanystudentsandorthopedicsresidentsoverthe40years inwhichhewasateacher.

HehadseveralstudiespublishedintheRevistaBrasileirade OrtopediaandonestudypublishedinthejournalArthroscopy, withhissonDr.EduardoLuísCruellsVieira(alsoan orthope-dist)andwithProf.Dr.MoisésCohen.

Ifmedicineingeneralandorthopedicsinparticularwere hisart,thekneejointwashispassion.Heeasilygotcarried awayinexplainingthemechanismofautomaticrotationor ofthescrew,rolling/slidingandinsertionsofthe semimem-branosusorpoplitealmuscle.Moreover,hesaidthattheknee servednotonlytobearweightbutalsotosupplicate.Awayof bringingourselvesclosertoGod.
