Diagnosingkneepainhasbeenusedtobedifficult.Contrast

pneumoarthrographymadeitpossibletoindirectlyviewthe

internalmeniscaland ligament structuresoftheknee and

wasaprecursorofmagneticresonanceimaging.Specialized

groupsbegan toemerge inthe DepartmentofOrthopedics

of the Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de São Paulo

(FMUSP)andDr.MarcoAmatuzzi,whoseinterestatthattime

was in the pathology of the feet, began to take an

inter-estinpneumoarthrography.Meanwhile,Iwasbeginningmy

lifeinOrthopedicsasanattendingphysicianintheInstitute

ofOrthopedicsof FMUSP.The KneeGroup ofthe Institute

ofOrthopedicsand Traumatology (IOT) started to meeton

Thursdayevenings,whichwasouron-dutydayinthe

emer-gencyservice,andonFridaymornings,weattendedpatients

whocameseekingpneumoarthrographyanddiagnostic

clar-ificationofkneediseases,underAmatuzzi’sleadershipand

guidance.

OnThursdayevenings,wereadanddiscussedstudiesthat

Amatuzzihadselectedandsummarizedontorecordcardsfor

quickconsultation.Overtheyears,colleaguesfromother

hos-pitalsstartedtovisittheIOT,whichbecametoosmallforthe

meetingsandbecamerestrictedtovisitsbyexternalpatients.

ThemeetingsthenstartedtobeheldinAmatuzzi’s

consulta-tionoffice.TheKneeGroupofIOT-USPgavecoursesthatwere

greatlysoughtafter,untilitwasdecidedtofoundthe

Brazil-ianSocietyofKneeSurgery(SociedadeBrasileiradeCirurgia

doJoelho,SBCJ),inAugust1983.

Atameetingsponsoredbyalaboratory,whichwasheldina

roomattheHotelMaksoudPlazainSãoPaulo,MarcoAmatuzzi

foundedtheSBCJ.

ThemeetingsoftheKneeGroupcontinuedandstillexist

today withinthe IOT, whilethe SBCJdeveloped and went

beyondthelimitsoftheIOTtoreachtheworld.

Manytraineesattendedkneesservicesthatwereinitially

accreditedandtodayarecertified,inordertolearnthe

con-ceptsofkneepathology.

Theexchangesoftraineesandthefrequentvisitscreated

ties offriendshipamongthevarious membersoftheSBCJ,

whichareitsmark.Itscongressesseemtolikefamilybirthday

parties,inwhichmeetingswithpeoplewhoweholddearare

commemorated.

Atnationallevel,wehaveheldmanycongresses, which

havebecomeknownfortheirsuccess,andtraditionalregional

courses,amongwhichsomehavenowgonebeyondtheirtenth

appearance.

High-quality presentations, which have always been a

mark ofthe SBCJ’s members, have become established as

standardandthisisalwaysmaintainedandrefined.Setting

anexampleisthebestwaytoeducate.

Feesorannualdueshaveneverbeencharged.Belonging

totheSBCJisanhonor;wehaveneverhadanelection,since

theboardsofdirectorshavealwaysbeenchosenbyconsensus

andnegotiation.

Disputeshaveoccurred,andtherehavebeenafairfewof

them,buttheyhaveneverinterferedwiththeprogressofthe

Society,whichhasalwaysbeenaboveanypersonalproblems.

Withinthe board ofthe SBOT, the participationofSBCJ

members is very significant,given that therehave already

been five presidents of the SBCJ who governed the SBOT

admirablyandtherewillprobablybeothersinthefuture.

TheSBCJhasestablishedsolidinternationalrelationships

throughtheintermediationofitsmembers,and thesehave

addedtothesustainabilityofitsstructureofcontinuing

med-icaleducation.

WehavebroughthereJackHughston,HenryDejour,John

Insall, Frank Noyes, James Andrews, Lamberto Perujia and

manyothers,thishasallowedustoexpandourfieldof

knowl-edge. Through visits to their services, we have been able

tobringin newtechniquesand internationalizeour

mem-bers.Ourinternationalrelationshipshavebeenincreasingand

todayweknow aboutallthemajorcentersofkneesurgery

participatedinmanycoursesandinternationalcongressesas invitedguestsandasactivemembers.

Wefoundedandpresidedoverthefirstdirectorateofthe LatinAmericanSocietyofKneeArthroscopyandSports Trau-matology(SociedadLatinoamericanadeArtroscopiaRodillay TraumatologíaDeportiva,SLARD).Wehavesolidcontactswith theLyonGroup,withwhichweorganizestudydayseverytwo years;thenextonewillbeinCuritibain2014.Atthelastevent, whichwasheldin2012,wewereguestsinLyon,withthehonor ofbeinganinternationalspeaker.

We were founders, as active members, of the Interna-tionalSocietyofArthroscopy,KneeSurgeryandOrthopedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), which held its last congress in Brazil.Today,ISAKOSispresidedoverbyMoysesCohen,one ofourformerpresidents.

I am sure that right now there will be an SBCJ mem-berundergoingtrainingsomewherearoundtheorthopedics world,makingcontactsandseekingnewpaths.

Diagnosingkneepaincontinuestobedifficultandweare continuingtotrytounderstandit.Thedifferenceisthatwe

arenowjoinedtogetherthroughagreatfriendshipspanning 30years,whichiswithoutdoubtthesecretofthisideathat wassuccessful.

TheRBO, withthe backing ofits associate editors,pays homagetotheSBCJbypublishingthisissue,whichonly con-tainsstudiesonthekneethatwereawaitingpublicationafter approvalbythejournal’seditorialbody.
