Chat 12/04

(16:39:15) m2 says to All: I could understand everything at the explanation but I couldn!t understand well the reports

(16:39:17) C1 says to angelita: They arent so difficult but its difficult to write the same answer we have recorded on our course.

(16:40:44) angelita says to All: M2, do not try to understand everything you hear in the audio material. This is not the way we should listen. You have to be aware of the listening strategies and try to use them. Whenever you have difficulties, email me.

(16:40:58) T1 says to All: I do not think the activities are difficult, we have only to pay more attention in order to listen, and I think the most par of you has this difficulty

(16:42:11) F says to All: All these activities ( course ) is a reflection for us, for our job in the classes (…)

(16:43:20) M2 says to All: Ok, teacher I will try, but I would like to get the real meaning of the message I heard

(…)

(16:44:39) angelita says to m2: The real meaning of the message may be different from the real words used. What is more important: the meaning or the words used?

(…)

(16:45:50) angelita says to All: When we study listening, we have to set up priorities. Do you not think so?

(16:46:59) F says to All: Yes, we need to pay attention in all the words, in all the situations and also try to understand the situation

(16:47:43) M2 says to All: The words are important for listen but if the person can!t understand he/she had a problem, isn!t it.

(16:48:06) angelita asks All: If you go to a lecture about Astro-physics or about the Quantum Theory in portuguese. Do you think you are going to understand the lecture?

(…)

(16:48:53) F says to All: Some words is possible to understand like the cognates in english. (…)

(16:49:13) M2 says to All: Of course we will get the general meaning.

(16:49:14) angelita asks All: So M2, I have a tremendous problem because there are certain Brazilian songs that I can not understand all the words. Is there a solution for my case?

(16:49:24) F says to All: Maybe we can understand the subject of the text but all the text is impossible

(…)

(16:50:22) V says to angelita: I think we find a general idea about the text, because we can make prediction and use our previous knowledge

(…)

(16:51:43) F says to All: Sometimes in our language, portuguese, we need to understand the context and the kind of people wrote the song to try understand what they want to speak

(…)

(16:52:02) T2 says to All: I think that when we go to a lecture we usually have an idea about the topic. We could prepare ourselves with some reading about it.

16:52:08) angelita says to V: This is what happens in every listening situations. You use your knowledge of the world and you use the prediction strategy. In any language. if those fail, you fail to understand.

(16:52:51) C1 says to angelita: Astro-physics is difficult to understand teacher. I can listen but not understand. Its not part of my knowledge also in Portuguese.

(16:53:00) T1 says to angelita: I would add something about work with music. Many times I do not work totally with the letter, only pieces that are interested to clas, the subject we are studying. What do you think about? The comprehension is better.

(16:53:11) V says to angelita: I agree with you F.

(16:54:50) T2 says to All: I think as you,C1

(16:54:52) angelita says to All: You see, knowledge of the world is fundamental in any listening situation. It helps you to construct the meaning. Do you think there is a correct comprehension for everything?

(16:56:27) angelita says to T1: We can try to facilitate comprehension when we give listening tasks to our students. Using their knowledge and doing some prediction will help them.

(16:56:33) T2 says to All: No, I do not, because we are different people with different points of view of things! (…)

(16:57:11) C1 says to T2: I agree with you T2 (…)

(16:57:44) F says to All: No because there is a principal idea, but you can interpret in different ways. an example is the bible each religion understand of its way

(16:58:17) angelita says to T2: with what do you disagree T2? I do not get you. (…)

(16:58:34) V says to angelita: No, I do not. Because we have different point of view and a depth knowledge or not [respondendo pergunta em 16:54:52]

(16:58:35) T2 says to All: That is it, F! That is what I wanted to say!

(16:59:09) Sa says to All: In my opinion, I agree with teacher about listening because at Cultura works this, with knowledge

(16:59:29) angelita says to All: Bingo, F. Another example is when we go to watch movies.

Sometimes we have different "comprehensions" because this depends a lot on the experience of life of each one.

(…)

(16:59:41) T2 says to All: It is about our interpretation of things as F said.

(16:59:51) m2 says to All: The meaning of the words used in an song depends on the context they are used.
