Aftera long effort,Revista Brasileira de Ortopedia (RBO) has reachedalevelthatputsitamongtheworld’smostimportant publications.
Thisinformationisbasedonthenumbersprovidedbythe technicaldepartmentofourpublisher,Elsevier,whichhas pre-senteduswithseveralparameterstoguideourselectionof studies.
Thisisthankstoagreateffortbyourauthors,whohave beenabletogreatlyimprovethequalityoftheirwork,whether submittingorreviewingarticles.
Thestrictnessofoureditorshasbeenparamountto estab-lishaninternationalstandardforourpublications.
Itispossibletomeasuretherelevanceofajournalbythe numberofarticlessubmittedforpublicationandbythevariety inthesourcesofthosesubmissions.
We have received submissions from Portugal, Spain, England,India,Turkey,andLatinAmerica,andwecontinueto haveanincreasingflowofBrazilianstudies,whichaverages 60articlespermonth.
AnotherwayisbymeasuringthelevelofcitationofRBO studiesinindexedinternationalmagazines,atoolthatisalso providedbyElsevier.
Westartedthismeasurementin2014;thecitationindexof ourstudieshasdoubledeachyear,whichshowsthe penetra-tionofourjournalworldwide.
Thisrapidevolutionhasafinancialcost,fromproduction todistribution; theseexpenses aresupportedbythe Brazil-ianSocietyofOrthopedicsandTraumatology(SBOT),which hasgone togreatlengthstokeepRBOinthislineof excel-lence.Theproduction,publishing,translation,printing,and distributionofRBOhasahighcost,whichisequivalenttohalf thecostoftheexamtoobtainthedegreeofOrthopedicsand TraumatologySpecialist,peryear.
Theboardhasbeenstudyingmeasurestominimizethese expensesinseveralways.Oneofthemwouldbetoincrease thesponsorships,whichweregreatlyreducedlastyear.
There is also an important institutional cost involved. Therearesixannualissues,with20articlesineach,and there-forewehavetobeveryselective.RBOhasreachedalevelof refusalofapproximately70%,whichisequaltothelevelofthe
JournalofBoneandJointSurgery,thejournalofgreatestimpact inorthopedicsandtraumatology.Theunderstandingofthose whosearticleswererefusedisimportant,aswewantto con-tinuetocountontheprestigeofthehighestpossiblenumber ofnationalandinternationalauthorsonRBO’spathofgrowth. WearecurrentlystudyingadigitalformatforRBO,which wouldincreasethenumberofstudiesincludedandimprove theagilityofproductionanddistribution,reducingthe wait-ingtimeforthepublication.Itisimportanttorememberthat, currently, approved studies are published on Science Direct, whichallowsimmediateaccessontheInternettoresearchers regardlessoftheirphysicalpublication.Wewillcontinueto maintainthesamelevelsofrequirement,aswefeelthatthis isappropriateforthelevelofBrazilianorthopedics.
IntheseyearsheadingtheRBOEditorialBoard,wehave hadtheopportunitytoexperienceanimpressiveadvancein thequalityofourscientificproduction,whichisalsonotable inourcongressesandinourparticipationinthecongresses ofinternationalsocieties.
We believethat RBO’s excellence is amarker ofSBOT’s excellence.
