Ascientificjournalislikeaconvoythattravelsthroughtime, followingitsmomentsanditstrends.Onthissupposedly end-lessroad,therearegoodandbadstretches.
The members of the convoy are temporary, being very presentatsomemomentsandabsentinothers,butalways participatinginitsdirection,composingitsstructureandits style.
Thepeopleinchargesetthedirectionandpace,without afinaldestination.Thetargetischangeableandcanbe redi-rectedaccordingtoseveralfactors,butthemaingoalisalways toensurecontinuity.
In2009,presidentRomeuKrauseentrustedmewiththe roleofdirectingRBOandgivingitallthefeaturesofrenowned journal,asSBOTdeserves.
Wewereinatransitionalsituation,astheformer publish-inghousewasclosingandwehadasmallnumberofarticles tobeassessed.
Theconvoyhadsloweddown.
Withnoother option, wedecidedtocompletelychange RBO’sstructureandtohireanewpublisher;anewcoverwas designedandweaskedclosecolleaguestosubmitarticlesfor thefirsteditionundermydirection.Theprincipleshadbeen establishedbythosethatprecededme:seriousness,honesty, andthesearchforquality.Ijustfollowedthepath.
Theconvoyhaddirectionandprinciples,sofollowingthem wassufficient.
Imadeapresentationonhowtopublishascientificpaper inseveralBrazilianregions,attheinvitationofthepresidents ofthetime;thiswasanimportantmotivatingfactor,andthe understandingofthereviewerswasalsoparamountto accel-eratethepaceofpublication.
Thescientificproductionhasbeenincreasing,basedonthe mainprincipleofeducation:teachingbyexample.National authors,seeingqualityworkspublishedonRBO,havegreatly increasedthedemandforourjournal.Thishasresultedina greatincreaseofarticles;ourlocalpublisher,excellentinits performance,becametoosmallforthedemandoftheauthors.
Theconvoywasgrowingandneededmoresupportforits structureandnavigation.
Wemovedtoaninternationalpublisherwithavast struc-turethatcouldsupportRBO’sgrowthanddemand.
Itwasthenuptoustoventurebeyondourlimitsandseek toenterthedifficultinternationalmarketofscientific produc-tion.
Internationalindexersareverydemandingandthe com-petitionisfierce.PresentingRBOandBrazilianorthopedicsto theworldwasadoubt,aswehadgrownsignificantlyanda negativeresponsetothisexposurecouldleadtogreat disap-pointment.Inourenvironment,wewondered:“whatwillthe comparisonwithinternationalmagazinesbelike?”
Thiswasthepath,andtheconvoyneededtofollow. IndexinginPubMedwasamilestone inourhistory, and weowethistothequalityoftheworkandtheactionsofour publisher.
RBOtimidlybecameknowntotheworld.Soonourcitation level,whichrepresentsthenumberoftimesstudiespublished inRBO arecited,began asteadyrise.Thisincrease wasso significantthatweareawaitinginclusioninISI(International ScientificIndexing),whichwillprovideuswithimpactfactor. Wearealreadyataninternationalstandardandwereceive works from all overthe world,which createsaproblemof spaceforpublications.
Overthecourseofthesenineyears,wehaveprocessedover 2200articles,withavaryingrejectionindexthatnowreaches 35%,placingusamongthebestorthopedicjournals.
Accepted and rejected works are our heritage; those acceptedaddedvaluetothejournal,whereastherejectedones wereveryimportantinstrumentsoflearningfortheauthors andthereviewers.
